Metro Bowl: Overtime madness and the Gators prevail…by inches (stats)

The final game of the OFSAA Bowl series featured the Metro Bowl between Donald A. Wilson Gators (Whitby) and St. Andrew’s College Saints (Aurora). The most competitive game of the day saw the teams draw to a 7 and 7 halftime score. The Gators shut down the much talked about SAC passing game to 15 yards in the opening half. Yannick Harou accounted for the only SAC first half touchdown on a 5 yard run. Not to be outdone, Wilson RB #23 Chivon Gallagher responded with an 11 yard run on the ground.

The second half continued to see the defenses hold tight. Late in the 3rd quarter Harou broke a long toss play for a touchdown, making the score 14 to 7, a score which held up through the end of the quarter. With Wilson driving mid way through the 4th quarter a costly fumble resulted in a momentum shift to the Saints…but the Gator defense held on and forced a two and out.

Just over 3 minutes remaining Wilson started deep in their own end and on the first play from scrimmage completed a deep pass from George Papadakos to Gallagher. The next play Papadakos scrambled for a first down to the Saints 37 yard line with 2:34 remaining…and the Saints called timeout to settle down the troops. Without the Saints back on the field the “c’mon man’ play of the day happened…it seemed the ref had whistled in the play and the Gators ran it in with no defenders on the field. The next play another first down for Wilson down to the 25 yard line…and on the very next play Gallagher caught a ‘wheel’ pass wide open…and after the convert the game was tied at 14 with 2:04 remaining. Both teams traded 2 drives to no avail before the overtime period.

OVERTIME SHOOTOUT

1ST: Wilson started with the ball first and completed a 3 play drive that resulted in a Gallagher touchdown on the fake hitch / wheel route.

1ST: SAC began their drive with a 6 yard run by Harou. On second down a quick out to Kett resulted in a first down on the Wilson 24 yard line. A loss of 5 yards on the 3rd play which was on 1st down. 2nd and 15 saw Wilson go offside to repeat the down and gave SAC a 2nd and 10. What looked to be a pass interference call was not flagged on the 2nd down. 3rd and 10…pass complete to Kett…and the sticks come out for the measurement. NO GOOD…WILSON WINS – 21 TO 14
