New era of cooperation between Calgary Colts, Dinos and Stampeders

A new era of co-operation has begun on the Calgary football scene both on the field and off.

For the first time the Calgary Colts and University of Calgary Dinos will share the same field as they prepare for their upcoming seasons.

And for the first time the Colts will be a part of a ticket campaign involving the Dinos and Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders.

Anyone purchasing a Stampeders season ticket will also receive a season pass for all Colts and Dinos games.

The Colts’ home opener is Aug. 19 at McMahon Stadium, with the Regina Thunder visiting.

The Colts wrapped up their spring camp May 6 and moved on to join the Dinos on the field on May 8, where over the next 10 weeks they will train together before training camp begins July 21 in preparation of the start of the Prairie Football Conference season.

β€œWe’ll be taking the equipment off for the summer now,” Colts head coach John Stevens said.

β€œWe have to guard against injuries. The amount of contact you can have has to be limited. Otherwise they come into the season beat up. They’re going to get beat up enough during the season.”

The Colts are coming off what Stevens said was a very successful spring camp at McMahon Stadium May 2-6. His coaching staff whittled their roster down to 110 bodies. They will go with a 90-man roster for the season.

Stevens was especially pleased with what he saw on offence at camp under Adam Blasetti, who has added offensive co-ordinator duties this season after serving as offensive line coach for the past four seasons.

β€œI thought he has done a great job pulling the offence together,” Stevens said.

β€œOur entire offensive coaching staff has been working hard since January putting together a new package. I’m pleased with how that’s gone.”

The Colts other offensive coaches include former Stampeder great Tom Forzani and CFL star Ryan Thelwell as receivers coaches, Ian Couture as quarterback coach and Jason Hutchins as running back coach.

The Colts appear to be very strong at the quarterback position. They return Derek Cooper and Jeremy Long and have recruited high school / midget star Cole Meyer from White Rock, B.C.

Long backed up Clayton Masikewich β€” who is now at St. Francis Xavier University β€” in 2011 and had two touchdown passes among his 13 passing attempts.

Meyer threw 22 touchdowns in midget football in 2011, completing and astounding 101 of 134 passing attempts for 1908 yards in a 13-0 season.

β€œI love it here,” Meyer said after the camp-concluding scrimmage May 6.

β€œIt’s pretty crazy weather. We had six inches of snow yesterday. I’m used to the rain. But it’s awesome here. I’m feeling pretty comfortable.”

The Colts’ offence also has some solid receivers. Rodreke Joseph is among the returnees, joined by Richard Sawatsky from the University of Calgary. Stevens also recruited Tyron Ledingham from Carson Graham Secondary in North Vancouver.

The Colts open the regular season on the road Aug. 12 against the Saskatoon Hilltops.
