NS: Week Six Roundup of NSSAFFL

This past week in the Nova Scotia Student Athletic Federation Football League (NSSAFFL) saw the Citadel Phoenix continue their dominance in the league.  They took care of business on the field against the Charles P Allen Cheetahs to remain undefeated in the league and in the Nova Division.  

Meanwhile, the Horton Griffins kept pace with the Phoenix by dispatching the John Hugh Gillis Royals.  As a result, the Griffins have yet to register a loss in the NSSAFFL and the Scotia Division.

The Avon View Avalanche easily defeated the Cole Harbour Cavaliers while the Northeast Kings Titans has an easy time with the Central Kings Gators.  The Lockview Dragons won a nail biter against the Dartmouth High Spartans.  Finally, week 6 of the NSSAFFL ended with a close one as the Auburn Drive Eagles topped the JL Ilsley Judges. 
Now, the playoff picture is looking murkier.  While the Phoenix and Griffins are tops in their divisions, all other teams are either in log jam or are very close behind one another. There are only three weeks left in the regular season schedule so look for the intensity to pick up as home field advantage and seeding are at stake.  It is shaping up to be an exciting next few weeks in the NSSAFFL.
Here are the results from Week 6 action:
Citadel High Phoenix 33, Charles P Allen Cheetahs 7:
In the “must see” game of the week, it was a battle of two undefeated teams at Burnside Turf.  The Phoenix proved why they have been dominant by handing the Cheetahs their first loss of the season and giving the team some distance atop of the Nova Division.
The Phoenix’s offense came up big in this game led by quarterback Derek Brown, who threw four touchdown passes.  Wide receiver A’dre Fraser rushed for 65 yards and had 130 receiving yards.  He ran into the end zone for two touchdowns.  Running back Ryan Kublek ran for 125 yards on 15 carries while Sam Demont caught a 40 yard touchdown catch.
Defensively, the Phoenix was in game form with a strong game from Mark Sampson.  He led the Phoenix with two interceptions and seven tackles.  Defensive end Max Fitzgerald also contributed with two interceptions and one tackle for a loss.  Another player that was a key to the defense’s success on the field was Emile Milton who had seven tackles and a forced fumble.
As for the Cheetahs, they amassed their points by kicking two field goals and a rouge.  Chase Kodejs is the kicker for the Cheetahs.  Quarterback Andrew Adams couldn’t get anything going against the Phoenix offense as his completion rate for the game was 46.2 percent (6 completions in 13 attempts for 47 passing yards). 
Running back Louis Stephen had 53 rushing yards on 16 runs while receiver Jordan Koch was held to 42 yards on three runs.  On the Cheetahs defense, linebacker Taylor MacDonald had one sack and 12 tackles while assisting on two tackles.  Linebacker Dustin MacCallum had six tackles and one tackle assist.
With the victory, the Phoenix are tops in the Nova Division and the NSAFFL league with a 6-0-0 record.  The team has put some distance in the standings as they are five points ahead of the second place Cheetahs in the division.  With the loss, the Cheetahs registered their first loss of the season and are now 3-1-1 with seven points.  That is good for second place in the Nova Division.
Avon View Avalanche 27, Cole Harbour Cavaliers 7:
In Windsor, the Avalanche had an easy time against the Cavaliers.  Slotback Russ Lavergne had two touchdown receptions to lead the Avalanche offense on the field.  Running back J.P. Primeau rushed for 80 yards and had a touchdown reception.  He also kicked for a single point.  Quarterback Trevor House kicked two field goals and a conversion.
Middle linebacker A.J. Whitehead led the Avalanche defense with four sacks and 12 tackles.  The defense stifled the Cavaliers offense as middle linebacker Justin Dickenson, Cameron Mackay and Symba Smith had eight tackles.
As for the Cavaliers, running back Josh Lunda ran into the end zone once and kicker Jared Melnyk was successful on the conversion attempt.
With the win, the Avalanche is 4-1-0.  The Cavaliers are still winless this season with a 0-6-0 record are the basement dwellers of the Scotia Division, but are only two points behind the Sir John A MacDonald Flames.
Horton High Griffins 56, Dr. John Hugh Gillis Royals 0:
At Kinsman Field in Canning, it was a blowout.  The Griffins played a complete all round game as both the offense and defense were successful on the field against the Royals.
Griffins quarterback Greg Brown threw for three touchdowns and ran into the end zone for another touchdown in the victory.  Running back Robert Adams rushed for 100 yards and two majors for the victors.
Receiver Noel Morgan had a 25 yard touchdown reception while linebacker Will Stewart had a 42 yard touchdown reception and Mike Boylen had a 36 yard touchdown reception.  Griffin’s running back/wide receiver Cam Davidson also had one rushing touchdown. Kicker Loic Adam had two successful field goal attempts for the Griffins at the 28 and 36 yard lines.
On defense, Morgan had two interceptions as he also played defensive back role in the game.  In the first half of the game, defensive end Zack Daigle stifled the Cavaliers with two blocked punts.
The Griffins are tops in the Scotia Division with a 5-0-1 record and 11 points.  They have further distanced themselves and the Royals in the standings with a five point gap.  Additionally, the Griffins are the only other undefeated team in the NSSAFFL league. With the loss, the Royals drop to 3-3-0 with six points and are tied for second in the Scotia division.
Lockview Dragons 14, Dartmouth High Spartans 13:
At Lockview, the Dragons won a thriller against the Spartans.
Quarterback Nick Bronson threw an 80 yard touchdown reception to Brian Jones.  Also, the Dragons pivot ran into the end zone from the three yard line in the victory.
Spartans quarterback Cody Cluett found fullback/safety Jacob Moore for two touchdowns.  The team had a chance to win the game within the last minute of the game, but failed on a two point conversion attempt.
With the victory, the Dragons have a 3-3-0 record and are tied for third in the Nova Division.  With the crushing loss, the Spartans’ record is now 3-2-0 and is also tied for third place with the Dragons and the Prince Andrew Panthers.
Halifax West Warriors 31, Prince Andrew Panthers 14:
At Mainland Commons in Halifax, the Warriors bested the Panthers due to their offensive guns.
Quarterback Scott Borden was 12 for 20 with 274 passing yards and ran into the end zone for a touchdown.  Warriors running back Zack Sellars had a big day as he scored three touchdowns while on 18 carries and rushed for 172 yards.  Receiver Allan MacLeod also connected with Borden for a touchdown and had 128 yards on four catches for the victors.
For the Panthers, quarterback Nate Skeete was 11 for 20 with 151 passing yards.  Tailback Andrew Klain had 17 carries, and 104 yards. 
On defense, the Panthers were led by Andrew Shaw who made eight tackles (two of which resulted in a loss of yardage for the Warriors).  Defensive back Dylan Cossar and Matt Melvin made five tackles apiece.   Defensive lineman Oshane Johnson had three tackles which all resulted in loss of yards for the Warriors.   Additionally, Johnson knocked down a pass and forced a fumble on the Warriors.
Panthers head coach Joe Flemming also says that even though the team lost, a couple of players played a solid game.
“Honourable mention goes to Jake Moore, although not scoring, made some impressive catches on crucial plays,” comments Flemming.   “Honourable mention goes to Ian Melanson for making huge blocks all night long.”
With the win, the Warriors’ record is now 2-3-0 and they have moved into a tie with the Northeast Kings Titans with four points in the Nova Division.  Meanwhile, the Panthers fall to 3-2-0 and currently are in a log jam for third place in the division along with the Lockview Dragons and Dartmouth High Spartans.
Auburn Drive Eagles 22, JL Ilsley Judges 13:
At Burnside, the Eagles topped the Judges in a close one.  Quarterback Devon Taylor passed for two touchdowns and 201 total yards in the win for the Eagles.  The pivot also ran into the end zone to score for the Eagles.  Daniel Sule was another offensive gun for the team as he had six receptions for 82 yards and scored two touchdowns. 
The Eagles defensive unit came up big in the victory as well.  Defensive linebacker John Cole played a major role for the unit as he had 12 tackles and two sacks.  Trae Colley had an interception while Shaquille Johnson had a sack for a touch back.
Meanwhile on the Judges side, Connor Miller caught a 27 yard and a 9 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Donald Smith while S Leblanc was successful on two conversion attempts.
As a result of the victory, the Eagles are now 3-2-0 and sit in a second place tie in the Scotia Division with John Hugh Gilllis Royals and Sackville High Kingsfishers with six points.   The Judges are now 1-4-0 with the loss and are tied with Sir John A MacDonald Flames in the standings.
Northeast Kings Education Centre Titans 29, Central Kings Gators 7:
At Kinsman Field in Canning, the Titans had little trouble with the Gators. Quarterback Dylan deGraaf was 10 for 20 with 165 yards and four passing  touchdowns.  He also ran for 67 yards on seven rushes.
Titans Matt Whitford was a factor on offense as he ran in the end zone twice and ran for 95 yards.   Andrew Chase and Ty Pineo also connected with deGraff for a touchdown apiece.
On defense, Jacob Cogswell led the Titans with six tackles, four fumble recoveries and one interception.
As for the Gators, Cody Holland scored a touchdown on a pass from pivot Jacob Shepherd for their only score of the day.
With this victory, the Titans are undefeated in six home games and their record is 2-3-0.  They are currently tied with the Halifax West Warriors in the Nova Division with four points. As a result of the loss, the Gators remain basement dwellers of the division as they are winless this season. The Gators record is 0-5-0
