OFC: Varsity Stampeders look to start season strong

As the 2012 summer football season continues to approach us, we are stuck with numerous questions surrounding the competitive Ontario Football Conference Varsity division and who will be on top of the standings when August rolls around.

The Stampeders are thought to be one of the most competitive organizations in any given division in the OFC, but none more important than the Varsity division. Players are often highly looked at week in and week out by scouts and coaches from high levels of football, such as the CIS. This year the Varsity team has quite a bit to look forward too as they step in to the season as one of the favorites in this division. A team with much of their core returning and the coaching staff looking better than ever. On paper they seem like a force to be reckoned with.

Let’s start off the field where the credentials in the coaching staff is superb. They will be coached by Sean Williamson, who will once again lead this team as the head coach. Defensive coordinator Adam Grandy is also returning, who is a linebacker coach at the University of Guelph. To name a few of the newcomers to the team they have welcomed former McMaster Marauders head coach Marcello Campanaro as the new offensive coordinator (was previously QB coach), as well as special teams coordinator Matt Robichaud who is a former long snapper for the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

Looking on the field at the Stampeders, they seem to have a strong team going forward, as they feel there are numerous players on both sides of the ball that can affect the outcome of a game on any given week. Talking with a few of the coaches about this team over the weeks, they’re main concern is starting out the season strong and taking that to the end. The team itself has talent all over, but here are some of the key players going forward:

Defence

DB Lucas Merlin
DB Leigh Szela
LB Alec Robertson
DL Andrew Ziebart

Offence

QB Eric Morelli
RB Aaron Veltri
OL Nick Firlit
OL Greg coffin

The Varsity Stampeders season kicks off vs. The Twin Cities Predators, this Saturday May 26th and is expected to be a competitive game thus far.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
