Ontario (Halton): Rams upset Lords for first win in 13 years

For the first time in 13 years the MM Robinson Rams beat the Nelson Lords senior football team. Coach Matt Wright was on the team in 1999 for the last victory over Nelson.

It was a sign of things to come when the Rams scored on the second play of the game. Jon Howard, on a sweep. Pivot, Troy Downton connected with Jacobs Jones in the end zone and the score was 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Rams posted two more majors in the second quarter and would have had two more but for a fumble on the two-yard line and an interception. The defence scored too with a fumble recovery. Kyle Hallet and Nick Firlit caused the fumble and Alec Robertson ran for the TD, with some blocking from his teammates. Will McInnis scored the final major of the first half and the Rams were up 28-0 at halftime.

Nelson pivot, DB and kicker Eli Piliew came into the game from resting his injured shoulder in the second half, and although the Lords scored on their first possession, marching 85 yards down the field. It was the only score the strong Rams defence allowed. The Rams’ kicker Jordan Camp, fresh from the 53 yard field goal last week against Loyola,  made good on a field goal in the fourth and the game final was 31-7.

The impact of the upset was visible with one Nelson player, who was a member of the bronze medal team Ontario West, who had tears streaming down his face during the hand shakes.

The win puts the Rams in second place, ahead of Holy Trinity and Loyola, although all three have a 2-1 record. Nelson now has a 1-2 record and will need a win to keep hopes alive to make the final four for the playoffs.
The Rams host undefeated, first-place, Corpus Christi next Thursday, October 4.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
