OVFL: Metro Toronto reigns supreme over Cumberland in clash of the cats

When Nikko Stamatis looked at the scoreboard at the start of the third quarter, it didn’t faze him. With such poise, such skill, he knew the game wasn’t out of reach.

Trailing 21-7 to start the third quarter, the star quarterback rallied his troops to a 41-21 come-from-behind victory over Cumberland. Metro Toronto played their best half of football to date, scoring five straight touchdowns.

Stamatis proved his standing as top QB in the league, torching the Panthers defense for 41 points. Coming into week 7, Cumberland had been one of the best defenses in the league, having allowed just 19 total points in its first five games. Stamatis now boasts a ridiculous 176.6 QB rating, a 61% completion percentage, over 1600 yards through the air to go along with 17 passing touchdowns and zero interceptions. So far this season, he has shown he deserves serious consideration for league MVP.

Head Coach Frank Panos thought his team came out strong to start the second half. “Our team played an outstanding half of football”, he exclaimed.

Running back Jordan Richards had a monster game for Metro, gaining 120 yards and two touchdowns on just 17 carries. Richards is now fully recovered from his torn hamstring injury and looks to have his burst back. He will join a powerful three-headed backfield attack along with Travis Jennings and Marvin Gaynor. The trio has combined to rush for 710 yards and 10 touchdowns so far this season.

“The Usual Suspects” came to play again in week 7, as Stamatis’ favourite targets once again came up big for Metro. Omari Archibald had 11 catches for over 150 yards receiving and two touchdowns, while Kyle Wright hauled in 5 passes for 75 yards.Β Β Travis Jennings had another big game receiving out of the backfield, nabbing three balls for 62 yards. He also contributed on special teams as well, returning one kick off 67 yards into Panther territory.

The Wildcats D came up huge in the second half, with Jason Agyei’s second interception of the year returned 85 yards into Cumberland’s red zone. Metro’s defense, led by linebacker Will James and defensive lineman Fardin Gadjyev, effectively shut down the Panthers stout running game.

Metro will have their work cut out for them this Saturday at 5:00pm against the undefeated London Mustangs. A win by the Wildcats could set up a four way tie for first place in the league. This weekends match-up should be a good one.
