OVFL: Oshawa Hawkeyes fall short in defensive battle

The Oshawa Hawkeyes Varsity team took the field this past Saturday knowing they would be doing the same thing in a matter of days with their make up game on Tuesday against the Markham Raiders. Even with the distraction of another game coming so soon the Hawkeyes fought hard but came up short against Cumberland losing 18-1.

Offensively the Hawkeyes had lots of trouble moving the ball; statistically Hawks QB Harrison Quinlan had his worst game throwing for just 96 yards as well as two interceptions. The offense in total only gained 160 yards, which puts a lot of stress and pressure on your teamā€™s defense.

The Hawkeyes defense appeared to be up to the task facing a sturdy Panther offence that was averaging 25 points a game heading into last weekend. The Hawkeyes were back to attacking the QB well, racking up 6 sacks on the day. Defensive linemen Colin Menzies and Reshaan Davis had a pair each, and Eric DeHaas led the defense from his MLB position making a total of 10 tackles on the day. The Hawkeyes also got into the interception column when DB Davian Reid-Lynch picked off Panthers QB Darcy Lavoie. However, as nice as all these stats are it wasnā€™t enough to stop the Panthers from winning the game.

Head Coach of the Hawkeyes Varsity team Coach T has emphasized special teams since day one and as usual it was strong, as both the kick off team and the kick return team did their jobs effectively. The plan moving forward is to now get the team ready to rebound Tuesday night on a very short week as they travel to Markham. The Raiders strong point is rushing the ball, something the Hawkeyes believe they can control and in turn, control the game. Having to play games so close together is never easy, but I predict the Hawkeyes bounce back with another defensive type game winning 14-6.
