OVFL Recap: Senior Grenadiers get rained out by Thunder & Ironmen

After waiting more than a week for their game against the Toronto Thunder due to sever weather conditions, the Limestone District Grenadiers were rained out once again.

On Tuesday, July 24 the Grenadiers traveled to Kinsmen Park in Pickering to play their week eight matchup against the Toronto Thunder.

QB Tyler Filson threw 8-of-18 for 68-yards in the Grenadiers 17-3 loss to the Thunder.  His longest throw was 16-yards and after sixty minutes managed three first downs.

DB Carson Halliwell was in possession of the pigskin for 20 carries down the hash marks for 79 of the 93 total rushing yards in the game.  Halliwell ran for four first downs.

LB Micah Baerwald played strong on the defensive end of the game having four solo tackles and raking up seven assists.

DV Hayden Peters had the only interception in the game and carried it for 10-yards before being taken down by the Thunder’s offense.  Peters also scored the only points in the game for the Grenadiers, a 13-yard field goal.

On Sunday, July 22 the Grenadiers ventured to Hamilton for their final game of the 2012 Ontario Varsity Football regular season.  With 1:34 remaining in the first half the Official’s put a stop to the game due to weather conditions.

On Thursday, July 26 the Grenadiers met up again with the Ironmen at Ivor Wynne Stadium, home of the Tiger Cats.

QB’s Tyler Filson and Nathan Thompson both shared the ball for most of the game.  They threw a combined 15-of-41 for a total of 223-yards.  Filson threw a 60-yard pass to Steve Knapton at 14:13 in the first quarter, the only touchdown for the Grenadiers in the game.  DB Hayden Peters and special teams attempted the PAT but it was blocked by the Ironmen defense.

DB Carson Halliwell was the main ball carrier for the game.  Halliwell raked up 73-yards off 17 carries, the longest drive being 18-yards.

The Grenadiers defensive line pulled together with more than 40 tackles, two sacks and three tipped passes.
DB Ryan Miles had the only interception for the Grenadiers when he picked off a pass by Ironmen QB Brett Watson for no gain.  TE Kadeem Ellis came out with the only pick for the Ironmen.

DB Hayden Peters blew one through the uprights when he posted three points off a 24-yard field goal to bring the Grenadiers up to nine.  Unfortunately it wasn’t enough.  The Grenadiers were ironed out with a final score of 18-9 Ironmen.

The senior varsity Limestone District Grenadiers will return to OVFL action for the 2013 season.
