Plenty of offence in weekend CJFL action (video)

In Winnipeg, Calgary Colts pivot Clayton Masikewich passed for 217 yards and 2 touchdowns, while tailback Cuong Thai Lieu had a 31-yard touchdown run on his way to a 128-yard performance as the Colts stayed a game in arrears of Saskatoon with a huge road victory, 49-33 over the Winnipeg Rifles.

Colts receiver Rodreke Joseph streaked 75 yards to paydirt as he took a hitch from Masikewich at the line of scrimmage in the second quarter in addition to having 5 receptions for 52 yards.

Rifles pivot Ryan Marsch threw for 425 yards, putting him over the 2300-yard plateau and tossed for 2 more scores, giving him 24 on the campaign.

At Gordie Howe Bowl, it was a classic defensive struggle on the hot prairie as Zach Schmidtā€™s 21-yard field goal early in the 4th would prove the difference as the Toppers stay atop the conference with a 10-7 victory over the Edmonton Wildcats.

Saskatoon linebacker Dylan Kemp was in on 10 combined tackles, 6 solo tackles and assisting on 4 others. Receiver Jace Muggli had 2 catches for 62 yards.

The 1-5 Cats had a chance to tie it in the last minute, but Ryan Smithā€™s 42-yard attempt fell short.

At Clarke Park, Clay Cooke reeled in a pair of touchdown passes as he had a 6 catch, 132 yard day; also Camille Lagimodiere & Will Heward had touchdown grabs as the Thunder rolled to an easy road win.

Asher Hastings, who started in place of Wyatt Catley, passed for 265 yards and 3 touchdowns in 3 quarters of work as the Regina Thunder defeated the Edmonton Huskies 42-4.

The Thunder hit the .500 mark at 3-3, while the Huskies fall to 0-6 and now have lost 30 in a row dating back to 2008.

The game of the week in the British Columbia Football Conference was in Langley as playoff positioning was at stake, as the hometown Rams would be stunned by the visiting Westshore (Victoria) Rebels 35-28. Both teams are now 4-4.

Most teams run the ball in hopes it opens up the passing attack, however the Rebels on Saturday night started with the run and didnā€™t look back as they would combine for 357 yards on the ground against a very big and quick Rams defence.

Two time conference player of the week, running back Greg Morris would lead the Rebels with 21 carries for 152 yards and a major. Niles Goguen would carry 12 times for 136 yards and a touchdown. In all, the Rebels ran 42 times using six different ball carriers.

Rebels quarterback Cat Todorovich returned from an injury to finish nine of 15 for 190 and would throw three touchdown passes. Kyle Pich, Chris McCormick and Vinne Cannata would haul in the majors; Cannataā€™s was a 57 yard bomb.

With the loss the Rams snap their four game winning streak and fall back into a third place tie with the Rebels with two games remaining, including a rematch in two weeks.

Rams QB Brandon Leyh would complete just five passes, but compiled 140 yards and two touchdowns, including an 85 yarder to Steven Martinez. Oddly enough Nick Downey would also score a touchdown from 85 yards out, but his was a hand off.

Elsewhere the Vancouver Island Raiders shutout the Chilliwack Huskers 75-0 and the Okanagan Sun beat the Kamloops Broncos 50-6.

In Ontario Football Conference action the Twin Cities Predatorsā€™ Keaton Jones provided a lone bright spot in an otherwise gloomy game against the Windsor AKO Fratmen, in which the Fratmen throttled the Predators 52-7. Other OFC games saw the Hamilton Hurricanes shut out the St Leonard Cougars 33-0, while the Ottawa Sooners beat the London Beefeaters 35-3 and the a 48-0 shut out for the Burlington Braves over the Brampton Bears.
