Three Ontario gridiron stars to soar into new CIS surroundings

A Team Ontario West standout and two Jacob Hespeler Hawks teammates are the newest additions to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks football program.

Tudor Bertiean, Matt Davidson and Erik McCormick have committed to the Golden Hawks and will join the team for the 2013 OUA campaign.

TUDOR BERTIEAN:

The 6’1, 170 pound receiver from Georgetown, Ontario chose the school due to academics and the promise a football program that is on the rise.

“I choose Wilfrid Laurier mainly because they are known as a business school and that is what I want to do in university,” explained Tudor.  “Also, I went on a tour there and I liked it right away as the small campus is perfect for me.”

“They are currently in a rebuilding stage and I want to be a part of the process of getting the team back up to the top. I plan on working hard and being a contributor right away. I feel like the football team is important to Laurier and that is what I want to be a part of. I can’t wait to play for the Golden Hawks.”

Among the teams Tudor has played for during his career include the Georgetown Crimson Tide of the Ontario Minor Football League (OMFL) and his high school team, the Christ the King Catholic Jaguars of the Halton Secondary School Athletic Association (HSSAA). This past July, the wide receiver helped Team Ontario West to a bronze medal finish at the 2012 Football Canada Cup in London, Ontario.

Commits Davidson

MATT DAVIDSON:

The 6’7, 242 pound offensive lineman from Hespeler, Ontario committed to the Golden Hawks due to proximity, comfort and familiarity.

“The reason I chose Laurier was because it’s close to home as well as I have a couple very close friends there already,” said Matt.  “Also, it’s because of the feel around campus and it’s a smaller campus which I really liked.”

“The football fans are amongst the best in Ontario.”

Matt recently completed a successful high school campaign with the Jacob Hespeler Hawks of the Waterloo County Secondary School Athletics Association (WCSSAA).  The Ontario offensive lineman experienced the highlight of his gridiron career in 2012, when the Hawks made it all the way to the league championship game with only 26 players.

ERIK MCCORMICK:

After visiting the school, the 6’4, 270 pound defensive lineman from Cambridge, Ontario knew that it was the place he wanted to embark on his CIS career.

“I chose Laurier because of the football program and it just felt like the right decision,” commented Erik.   “I went on the visits and it felt like home, it felt like this is where I want to be.”

“When you go on visits to schools, you have to ask yourself is this where I want to be? Is this the right fit? But after visiting there it assured me that this is where I want to go to school and play football for the next five years or so of my life.”

Ultimately, the Ontario standout feels that he can be a key contributor to the team.

“The football program had a bit of a down season this year, but I feel like it can get back to where it needs to be as a legitimate contender in the OUA,” added Erik.  “It also feels like a family and I really like that.”

Among the teams Erik has suited up for during his career include Cambridge Lions of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) and the Jacob Hespeler Hawks of the Waterloo County Secondary School Athletics Association (WCSSAA).  He will be reunited with Hawks teammate, offensive lineman Matt Davidson at Wilfrid Laurier.
