NCAA Signing Day 2018: Ounsted joins the Minutemen Canadian Brigade

CFC100 Jake Ounsted (CFC50 Mt. Douglas, B.C)
If you pay attention to the news than you know there’s always talk about oil pipelines from Canada to the United States, but now they’ve got a new development to write about with the UMass Minutemen signing CFC100 Jake Ounsted – making him their fourth Canadian commit this year.

Ounsted was a highly regarded defensive tackle out of Mt. Douglas in Victoria B.C, and throughout the season his name grew to prominence in recruiting circles as he began to turn heads with his play in high school and the FPC Camps. Keep in mind he’s an interior linemen when you read this stat line, because Ounsted managed to finish the year with 15 sacks, 21 tackles for loss and 4 forced fumbles, and it took only 12 games for him to achieve.

Along the way he earned multiple CFC Player of the Week awards and a spot on our CFC50 All-Canadian list, but more importantly he caught the eye of UMass who are going on a Canadian recruiting binge in 2018,

“I spent the weekend meeting all the coaches and some players and they were all really welcoming. The facilities were really nice and the school and team environments had a really good feeling to them. I’m really excited for my future.” Ounsted explains.

“I’d like to thank all my coaches, family, friends, and teammates that have supported and believed in me from the start. They have all really motivated me to become the person and player that I am today. Canada Football Chat has been really great for players across Canada to get noticed and raise their profile so thank you guys for everything you do.”

Ounsted will be joining the trio of CFC60 Arnold Mbembe, Darren Kyeremeh and Samuel Emilus out of Vanier College, and with their arrival comes the hope that the Minutemen can climb the FBS ranks as an Independent after going 4-8 last season. Their record may fool you, but UMass was competitive in every contest last year and held their own on the road against SEC programs Mississippi State and Tennessee in their marquee matchups.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
