BCFC kicks off 2013 season this weekend

The Langley Rams will begin their defense of the Cullen Cup this Saturday, July 27 when the BCFC opens its 2013 campaign on a day that sees all six teams in action.

The Rams, who captured the BCFC championship and came up just shy in the national title game falling to the PFC’s Saskatoon Hilltops, will begin their campaign on home turf at McLeod Athletic Park facing the Kamloops Broncos. The Broncos are looking to have a rebound campaign after missing out on the post-season last year.

The Okanagan Sun, led by new head coach Shane Beatty, will look to get off to a good start this year when they host the rebranded Valley Huskers, formerly the Chilliwack Huskers, at the Apple Bowl. The Sun had plenty of drama on the sidelines last season dispatching head coach Gavin Lake just before the start of the playoffs – a move that ultimately did not pay dividends as they would go on to lose to the Vancouver Island Raiders. The Huskers finished dead last in the BCFC standings last season with a 1-9 record.

The Westshore Rebels will host their Island rival Raiders at Westhills Stadiums. The Rebels enjoyed a strong regular season last year under the tutelage of 2013 BCFC Coach of the Year John Cardilicchia but have been in a bit of a scramble this season having changed their coach twice in the off-season.

Scott Mennie was slated to take over as the team’s bench boss but stepped down just over a week ago forcing the team to name Tim Kerase as its interim bench boss. The powerhouse Raiders, meanwhile, will be looking to get back on top of the BCFC after having their string of consecutive league titles snapped at six.

All games this Saturday will kick off at 7 pm.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
