CFCs “Top 25” High School poll – week 12 — “Two weeks to #1 – CFC #1 vs. #3 Monday” (video)


Only 2 more ‘top 25’ installments to go. Next weekend Nova Scotia and Alberta will crown champions when Horton takes on Citadel and Harry Ainlay plays Raymond (tier 1). Things get really interesting in Ontario this week with multiple ‘top 25’ teams playing one another, no bigger than the match up Monday with Nelson (CFC #1) and Cardinal Newman (CFC #3).

The CFC ‘top 25’ high school rankings is released between Sunday at 6pm and Monday at 12 noon depending on when scores are reported.

1 (1) Nelson Lords – Burlington, ON (9-0, 1-0)

The Nelson Lords are Halton Tier 1 senior champions after defeating the Corpus Christi Longhorns 28 to 15. The Lords jumped out to an early lead they never relinquished, relying on the arm of QB Will Finch. Finch finished 20 of 27 with 2 touchdowns and one interception. Nelson moves on to play CFC #3 Cardinal Newman (Hamilton Catholic) on Monday November 21 @ 10:00 a.m. for the GHAC title.

2 (2) CollΓ¨ge Notre-Dame Cactus – Montreal (11-1) FINAL

Louis-Philippe Normandin, Francis Baikie, and Mathieu-Louis Normandin were important in the Cactus’ Bol d’or victory over former CFC #1 SΓ©minaire Saint-FranΓ§ois Blizzard. The Cactus came away with a 17 to 0 victory in snowy conditions in Quebec city. Takeaways by the Cactus defense were the key to the game.

3 (3) Cardinal Newman Cardinals – Stoney Creek, ON (8-0)

The Cardinal Newman Cardinals held on to an early lead to outlast the St. Thomas More Knights in the Hamilton Catholic final. Dan Peterman caught 3 passes, 2 for touchdowns, and Eric Mezzalira had a touchdown and 135 yards rushing for the Cardiinals. QB Alex Hill was an efficient 7 of 11 passing.

Cardinal Newman will meet Nelson for the GHAC crown on Monday November 24th at 10:00 a.m. at McMaster University. The winner of that game will meet Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the Golden Horseshoe Bowl semi final on Friday November 25th at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke with a 10:00 a.m. kickoff.

4 (5) St. Paul’s Crusaders – Winnipeg (11-0) FINAL

Defeated last year’s Manitoba high school champions, Oak Park, 32 to 12 in the Manitoba final. RB Blair Mattes was a workhorse (game MVP) and defensive lineman Lucas Machado had a β€˜pick six’ in the win. QB Theo Deezar had a solid game as well as placekicker/receiver Rhys Hansen who had field goals of 21, , 17, 17, and 15 yards.

5 (6) Harry Ainlay Titans – Edmonton (13-0)

Defeated the Bev Facey Falcons 17 to 16 in the cold, cold Edmonton weather. Play the defending Tier 1 champion Raymond Comets this weekend in Tier 1 finals.

6 (4) St Thomas More Knights – Vancouver, BC (6-0, 3-0)

Outlasted Centennial 35 to 32 in quarter-final AAA BC Action on Friday. QB Mike Carney led his team on a 70-yard game winning touchdown with minutes remaining. STM faces Mt. Douglas this weekend in the semi-finals.

7 (7) SΓ©minaire Saint-FranΓ§ois Blizzard – Saint-Augustin, Quebec (10-1) FINAL

The Blizzard lost the Bol d’or to CollΓ¨ge Notre-Dame Cactus 17 to 0 in Quebec City this weekend. Turnovers were the ultimate demise for the former CFC #1.

8 (8) Riffel Royals – Regina, SK (10-0) FINAL

Trailing 10 to 9 in the fourth quarter, Royals Lance Pitza’s 95-yard β€˜pick six’ gave the points and momentum necessary for the Royals to win the Saskatchewan 4A provincial crown. The final score of 20 to 10 gave the Royals their first provincial crown since 2005.

9 (10) Northern Vikings- Sarnia, ON (9-0, 1-0)

Defeated the Herman Griffins (Windsor) in Western Bowl playdowns Friday 19 to 16. Alasdair Coy kicked the game winning field goad with 2.6 seconds remaining on the clock. Lost starting QB Jon Ravenhorst and RB Eliot Handy during the game against Herman. Their status is not known for Western Bowl semi-final Saturday in London. Play winner of Assumption (Brant) and J.F. Ross (Guelph).

10 (11) St. Andrew’s Saints – Aurora, ON (6-1, 2-0)

Defeated UCC in rematch of last year’s classic overtime final by a score of 27 to 22. Face King City (YORK) in Metro Bowl semi-finals this week.

11 (13) Vancouver College Fighting Irish – Vancouver (5-1, 2-3)

Defeated rival Notre Dame 35 to 14. Even without AAA regular season rushing leader (Matt Alvis) the Irish were able to control the game with their run game. Star receiver / db Justin Sanivdo filled in and scored three touchdowns. VC now awaits the winner of the W.J. Mouat / Kelowna Owls game.

12 (12) W.J. Mouat Hawks – Abbotsford, B.C. (5-1, 3-1)

Quarterfinal game against Kelowna was postponed due to snow in Kelowna. Will play the game Monday at 3 pm. at WJ Mouat.

13 (9) Bev Facey Falcons – Sherwood Park, AB (8-1-2) FINAL

Lost to Harry Ainlay Titans 17 to 16 in Alberta Tier 1 semi-finals. We will know if they are the 2nd or 3rd best Alberta team after this week’s final.

14 (14) King City Lions – King City (8-0, 0-1)

After being down 9 to 0 at the half the Lions were able to muster a comeback and defeat the Huron Heights Warriors. A 37-yard field goal with minutes remaining was the difference maker. The Lions depth made the difference in this and a late botched play on third down by the Warriors. Play St. Andrew’s college this week in Metro Bowl semi-finals.

15 (16) Notre Dame Knights – Brampton, ON (8-0)

Defeated Our Lady of Mount Carmel in peel championships on Wednesday by a score of 28 to 21. QB Christian Strong led the Knights to the victory despite an injury. Play St. Paul’s (Niagara) in Golden Horseshoe semi-finals on Thursday.

16 (17) Mount Douglas Rams – Victoria, B.C. (5-1, 2-2)

Defeated Lord Tweedsmuir 42 to 29 in quarter-final BC AAA action. Terrell Davis carried 16 times for 160 yards and 2 touchdowns and Mason Swift carried 15 times for 153 yards and one touchdown. Will face St. Thomas More this weekend in semi-finals.

17 (17) Oak Park Raiders – Winnipeg (9-2) FINAL

Lost to St. Paul’s in Manitoba finals 32 to 12. RB Kedon Sweetney was Oak Park’s player of the game, scoring on an electrifying 59-yard touchdown run.

18 (21) Raymond Comets – Raymond, AB (7-2)

Defeated Bishop O’Byrne Bobcats in the Alberta tier 1 semi-finals this Saturday 27 to 21. QB Brad Baker has been the key to their success…with his arm and legs. Can the Comets make it 4 tier 1 championships in a row?

19 (19) Citadel Phoenix – Halifax (10-0)

Defeated Darthmouth high school on Sunday 55 to 27. Derek Brown threw 5 TDs in the victory. The Phoenix will look to defend their title this weekend (Sunday 1pm @ SMU) against the Horton Griffins.

20 (20) Donald A. Wilson Gators – Whitby (6-0)

Another season another Durham tier 1 championship for Coach Papadakos’ Gators. Chivon Gallagher and Keldyn Aldstedt have starred for the team’s offense, defense, and specials all season. Play Northern secondary this week in Metro Bowl semi-finals.

21 (15) Bishop O’Byrne Bobcats – Calgary (7-3-1) FINAL

Lost to the Raymond Comets this Saturday in Alberta Tier 1 semi-finals 27 to 21. Late comeback was not enough.

22 (HM) A B Lucas Vikings – London, ON (8-1)

Lucas ended an eight-year run without a London championship. RB Eric Guiltinan had 234 yards and 16 rushes, scoring 3 tds in a 39 to 24 win over St. Thomas Aquinas. Now play Parkside in β€˜challenge game’ this week.

23 (24) Superior Heights Steelhawks – Sault Ste Marie (7-2)

The Steelhawks made it 14 in a row (NOSSA titles) for Sault Ste. Marie-based teams with a 38 to 18 victory over North Bay’s St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Bears. The victory gives the Steelhawks a birth in the Northern Bowl November 29th at 8:30am at the Rogers Center in Toronto against Sir Winston Churchill of Thunder Bay. The no-huddle spread offense in alive in the β€˜Sault’.

24 (22) Corpus Christi Longhorns – Burlington, ON (7-2) FINAL

Lost hard fought game to CFC #1 Nelson Lords (for the 2nd time this year). The Longhorns actually had more offensive production then the Lords but dug to big a hole to come back in the end. Aaron Veltri had 114 yards rushing in the loss. Connor Cooke chipped in with 116 yards receiving on 8 catches.

25 tie (25) AcadΓ©mie Saint-Louis Arsenal – Quebec (7-4) FINAL

Lost to Séminaire Saint-François 31 to 10 in the semi-finals.

25 tie (25) Bernice MacNaughton Highlanders – Moncton (6-3) FINAL

The comeback kids won the New Brunswick high school final in front of 4000 fans (1000 more than the AUS final). The Highlanders scored 2 fourth quarter touchdowns to win the final 14 to 13 over the Tantramar Titans. The defense caused the turnovers that allowed the offense to score the winning TDs. After a 3 and 3 regular season, the Highlanders got hot at the right time. This is the Highlanders fifth provincial title since 2004.
