OUA:
OUA Players of the Week October 20th 2014

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Players of the Week for the period ending October 20, 2014.

OFFENCE: Jazz Lindsey (Markham, Ont.) ā€“ 4thĀ yr. ā€“ Guelph

Jazz Lindsey produced one of the greatest individual offensive performances in Guelph Gryphons history this past Saturday, leading the No. 6 Gryphons to a thrilling 49-46 victory over the No. 4 Western Mustangs.

Lindsey set single game school records with 514 yards and 53 pass attempts; he completed 34 of the 53 passes. Trailing by eight late in the fourth quarter, Lindsey orchestrated a 10-play, 81 yard drive to bring the Gryphons within two and then executed a successful two-point conversion. After getting the ball back at midfield with 40 seconds to go and with no timeouts at his disposal, Lindsey moved the Gryphons into field goal range just before time expired, setting up the game winning kick. The win pushed the Gryphons record to 6-1 and secures them home-field advantage in the OUA semi-final.

DEFENCE: Cam Walker (London, Ont.) ā€“ 4thĀ yr. ā€“ Guelph

Walker recorded eight solo tackles and one tackle for a loss versus the potent offensive attack of the Western Mustangs on Saturday. With the absence of Ian Marouf, Jordan Thompson and Jeff Finley from last yearā€™s defensive line, Walker has been the cornerstone of the Gryphon defence. Despite the fact that the Western Mustangs were focused on neutralizing Walker on all of the outside runs, the fourth year defensive end consistently managed to fight off blocks and get to the ball carrier.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Tyler Crapigna (Nepean, Ont.) ā€“ 5thĀ yr. ā€“ McMaster / Daniel Ferraro (Mississauga, Ont.) ā€“ 4thĀ yr. ā€“ Guelph

When Tyler Crapigna kicked his 23rdĀ field goal of the season on Saturday it broke Lirim Hajrullahuā€™s single season record of 22, and put Crapigna alone at the top of the OUA record book.

That lasted for about an hour.

Like Crapigna, Guelphā€™s Daniel Ferraro also entered the weekend with 19 field goals, and tied Crapigna in dramatic fashion. With the game tied late in the fourth quarter, Ferraro nailed a 41-yard game-winning field goal with 1.7 seconds on the clock, as the No. 6 Guelph Gryphons upset the No. 4 Western Mustangs 49-46. Ferraro was good on 4/5 field goals, two from 41 yards, along with two others from 19 and 36 yards.

Crapigna was able to set a record that Ferraro couldnā€™t touch, though ā€“ the CIS all-time field goal record. In the fourth quarter of McMasterā€™s 27-10 win against Laurier, Crapigna kicked his fourth field goal of the game and the 83rdĀ of his career, breaking the previous CIS record of 82 held by Sherbrookeā€™s William Dion. In his career, Crapigna is 83 of 96 on field goals, has never missed an extra-point conversion, and made the game winning kick in the 2011 Vanier Cup. Against Laurier he went 4-for-4 from 29, 20, 18, and 41 yards.

Canada West POW October 20th 2014

CANADA WEST:

NEW WESTMINSTER, BCĀ ā€“ Canada West football was back in action over the weekend and battles for playoff positioning are becoming more important with each passing week.Ā  The Manitoba Bisons put the clamps on the favoured Saskatchewan Huskies at home, 41-8, while the Calgary Dinos looked primed for postseason in their 52-37 win over the Alberta Golden Bears.Ā  The weekend wrapped up with the UBC Thunderbirds coming out with a thrilling and crucial win over the Regina Rams, 33-32, on Shaw TV.

UBC quarterback Carson Williams, Manitoba defensive tackle David Onyemata and Calgary kicker/punter Johnny Mark led the way for their squads and have been selected as the Canada West Players of the Week.

OFFENCE: #13 Carson Williams, Quarterback (UBC Thunderbirds)

Carson Williams led the UBC Thunderbirds to their second victory of the season throwing for 256 yards and three touchdowns in a 33-32 victory over ReginaĀ SaturdayĀ afternoon in Vancouver. He did not throw a single interception.

A fifth-year captain from Abbotsford, BC, Williams was 20-for-32 on the day throwing touchdown strikes of 20 yards, 37 yards, and nine yards in the Thunderbirds win. He also rushed for another 68 yards on just six carries.

This season Williams has thrown for 1,401 yards and seven touchdowns. He has also rushed for 189 yards on the year, averaging 6.1 yards per carry.

Next up, UBC will be in Calgary onĀ Saturday, October 25Ā to take on the Dinos.

DEFENCE: #97 David Onyemata, Defensive Tackle (Manitoba Bisons)Ā

Manitoba Bisons defensive tackle David Onyemata was a force in the middle of the front four as the defence neutralized the #8 Saskatchewan Huskies by a 41-8 score in football action on Friday, October 17 at Investors Group Field (University of Manitoba campus).

The third year player had arguably his best game of his Bison career as he created havoc throughout the contest by disrupting runs and pass plays by one of the top teams in the country.

Onyemata finished with 5.5 tackles (four solo) with one tackle for a one-yard loss. The 6ā€™5ā€, 310 lbs. veteran was a key component on a Bison defence that only allowed 200 total offence yards by the Huskies in the crucial home match.

The Lagos, Nigeria native set the tone early with 2.5 tackles in the first quarter when the game was still close. He added three more tackles in the third quarter.

Onyemata is tied for 22ndĀ in total conference tackles at 24 and tied for sixth in Canada West with 3.5 tackles for losses in playing all six conference regular season games.

With the victory, Manitoba moves to 3-3 in the 2014 campaign and now faces the Regina Rams (1-5) onĀ Saturday, October 25 at 3 p.m. CT.

SPECIAL TEAMS: #33 Johnny Mark, Kicker/Punter (Calgary Dinos)Ā

Johnny Markā€™s name keeps creeping up the scoring leaderboard at the CIS, Canada West and school levels ā€“ and he reached an important milestoneĀ Saturday.

At theĀ 9:34Ā mark of the first quarter, Markā€™s 24-yard field goal against Alberta vaulted him past Jamie Boreham to become Canada Westā€™s all-time leading scorer, eclipsing the previous mark of 355 points. Mark went on to add another field goal as well as six converts, setting the new record at 367 points with two games remaining in the 2014 season.

The two field goals, from 24 and 26 yards, also move him to 63 on his career, eight back of former Dino Aaron Ifieldā€™s conference record of 71.

A two-time first team All-Canadian at kicker, Mark was drafted by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in last springā€™s CFL draft.

He and the Dinos will look to wrap up first place when they host UBCĀ SaturdayĀ afternoon at McMahon Stadium in their final home game of the regular season.
