Football Alberta Senior Bowl set for the May long weekend! (ROSTERS)

In its 23[SUP]rd[/SUP] year the Football Alberta Senior Bowl, which is an all-star game for graduating Grade 12 student-athlete high school football players, will take place this upcoming Monday, May 21[SUP]st[/SUP], at 12:00 p.m. at Edmonton’s Foote Field.

Bonnyville Returns!

Blake Adams is not really a trailblazer but let’s just say the trail he’s on hasn’t been blazed for a while. In 1990 the first ever Senior Bowl was run and two players from the Bonnyville Voyageurs were selected onto the “North” Team. Since that time 21 games have passed since the next one, Blake a defensive lineman, has arrived making Bonnyville the longest serving team from the original teams that had players make the Senior Bowl to have a player return. The good news is that there probably won’t be another 22 years pass before another Voyageur makes it again as Blake is the vanguard of a resurgence in that town with both the high school and bantam teams advancing to Provincials last year. In fact , Dan Jubinville, who was one of the original two players is now the bantam coach in town and took his Bandits all the way to the Tier III Provincial Final last year.

Sky’s the Limit!

Once upon a time there was nothing elite based at the high school level. No Provincials, no Senior Bowl, no nothing. Slowly through the 1980’s and ‘90’s to today the types of elite experiences has grown and grown to the point where four players from last year’s Senior Bowl tried out for and made Team Canada this spring that will compete in the IFAF World Junior Championships (U20) this July in Austin, Texas. Now, football is up there with the rest of the sports offering a chance to represent your country which was a pipe dream years ago. Andrew Boisvert (Salisbury – Sherwood Park), Tyler Henry (Camrose), Tanner Doll (St. Albert), and Michael Schmidt (Western Canada – Calgary) were all dressing for this game last year and now will be pulling the red and white Team Canada jerseys on this summer. The sky’s the limit!

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

HISTORY:

2012 will mark our 23rd year of the Football Alberta Senior Bowl however the history of the game dates back over 40 years.
On February 10, 1968; the executive of the then Alberta Football Coaches Association (a forerunner to Football Alberta) met in Red Deer to discuss the concept of an Alberta High School Football All-Star Game to be known as the “Senior Bowl”. The proposal involved the creation of two teams in a “North” vs. “South” fashion from the 56 High School football teams in Alberta.
Due to factors beyond their control the game did not occur and the idea remained dormant until it was resurrected in 1988 at a Football Alberta’s Planning Meeting. Even then it was a full two years until Rocky Mountain House’s Craig Berger kicked off for the “North” to St. Francis’s Sam Scalise of the “South” in Commonwealth Stadium on July 7, 1990 to begin what is now an annual event.
Today’s game is not much different from the proposal made in 1968. It will be a contest between the best high school football players in Northern Alberta (from Red Deer north) against their counterparts in Southern Alberta selected from the 120 High Schools currently with football programs.
In all the games that have preceded this one, the concept of showing off the best talent that Alberta high schools have that was dreamed of in 1968 has come true. With the continued support of its sponsors the game will continue to grow in its tradition and interest. Sometimes dreams do come true.

HOW IT WORKS:

The planning for each year’s Senior Bowl actually begins in November as the coaching staffs for both the “North” and “South” All-Star teams are picked from the ranks of the high schools throughout the province.
The staff’s are filled from the provincial finalist teams in Tier I, II, III and IV and championship teams from leagues with no provincial final representation. In April two selection camps are held to screen the over 600 nominee players from the team leagues in Alberta and out of it two 40+ man teams were finalized. Finally over the May long weekend the teams reconvene for a three day training camp followed by an Awards Banquet and the Senior Bowl Game.
