Fredericton’s Girouard and Johnson commit to X-Men football

ANTIGONISH, NS *– X-Men football head coach Gary Waterman is pleased to announce the commitment of two football standouts from Fredericton High School. Offensive lineman Colin Girouard and linebacker Reid Johnson have both committed to attend StFX this fall and will be donning the blue and white.

Girouard, who stands at 6’4” and weighs in at 275 pounds, began his football career when he was in the seventh grade. He has received many accolades since that time, beginning in grade nine when he was a league all-star, as well as receiving the top lineman award in the junior league. When he made the jump to senior football, Girouard received the rookie of the year award in his first season, followed by being named a league all-star and the conference’s top lineman in his senior year.

Coach Gary Waterman comments, β€œColin is an extremely gifted football player, and has played many different positions on the offensive line at a high level. It is evident that he has been working hard in the weight room, and his strength should definitely ease his transition to CIS football. We expect Colin to make an impact on our team very early in his career here.”

Reid Johnson is a multi-sport athlete who also plays hockey and rugby when he is not on the gridiron. At 6’0”, 190 pounds, Reid has the size and athleticism to become a standout defensive player at the next level. In 2011 he was a south western conference all-star and was also named the south western conference player of the year. Both Johnson and Girouard were integral members of the 2010 Black Kats team that captured the Ed Skiffington trophy as New Brunswick provincial champions.

Coach Waterman states, β€œReid has all of the tools necessary to be extremely successful at this level. He runs well and has a nose for the football. Reid is a very instinctive player and we are looking forward to getting him to campus in the fall.”

Former Fredericton High School head football coach Don Davis, who is currently on the X-Men coaching staff, comments, β€œStFX has always done well with athletes from the Fredericton area, and we are looking forward to continuing that tradition. I am confident that these young men will have a great experience at StFX, and we look forward to having both of them here as they are both top-notch players.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
