Training camp update with Coach Donovan and the Concordia Stingers

After four practices the head coach, now in his third year at the helm of the Stingers, shares his early impressions of training camp.

First, Donovan is pleased with the quality of the athletes and the depth at most positions.

“There’s a lot of good talent in our young class of recruits,” he said. “They are making camp very competitive, especially at the receiver and defensive back positions.”

Second, he’s pleased with the communications on the field which he says is “on-point.”

To no one’s surprise, Donovan is very happy with quarterback Trenton Miller, the 2015 RSEQ MVP. Miller is executing well and his intelligence allows the coaches to do more with offensive schemes.

Also drawing praise from the head coach were a couple of offence linemen – Matt Halbgewachs, the Regina native who was the Stingers’ No. 1 recruit last winter, and second-year man Maurice Bibaku who put in a lot of work in the off-season.

In the pleasant surprise category, Donovan thinks running back Widler Exilus from the Cégep Beauce-Appalaches Condors, Vanier Cheetahs receiver Vince Alessandrini and Danny Debrosse-Smith, a receiver from the Vieux-Montréal Spartiates, have surpassed expectations in the early going.

Although, training camp has started smoothly and there’s a lot of talent with the Stingers, the head coach is cautious.

“There’s still a lot of work to do to get where we want to go,” Donovan said. “Competition is still going to be heavy and intense right into our third week of camp.”
