We will be coveringΒ theΒ #CFC50Β PLAYOFF GAMES forΒ the West and Atlantic regions.Β While this will be generally geared towards theΒ #CFC50Β ranked teams, we want to hear from you if there are great rivalry games or exciting matchups, regardless of tier or division, that we aren’t aware of. Send us a ‘heads up’ by Tuesday each week and we’ll see what we can do:Β [email protected].
*Note: Some information was not available at press time.Β It will be added as it becomes available.
There was some great football this weekend as teams coast to coast either started their playoff run or ended it. Each week coming, will fulfill dreams of a championship or finish the season with thoughts of reflection and looking to next year’s season. As the high school football season continuesΒ across the country, we will continue to do our previews and recaps until the final whistle has blown.
….and now let’s get to it with this week’sΒ #CFC50Β PLAYOFF games RECAP

No. 2 Bev Facey Falcons (10-0, 2-0) (38)
Bellerose Bulldogs (6)
Bev Facey defeated another opponent to keep their perfect season intact. The 2016 Metro high school champions were led by, guess who….#CFC100 Chuba Hubbard who only needed 7 carries to gain 165 yards and score 3 touchdowns. Defensively, Bev Facey was led by Chase Avery who had 10 tackles, 5 solos and 1 TFL to go along with 1 interception. Avery was all over the field. The Falcons will need another strong effort from both these players as they face the Notre Dame Cougars from Red Deer in the next round.

No. 5 Leboldus Golden Suns (7-0, 1-0) 47
No. 30 Holy Cross Crusaders (7-1, 1-0) 29
The Golden Suns are truly ‘golden’ as the reigning 2016 4A Saskatchewan Champions for the 5th year in a row with their win over Holy Cross, 47-29. It is incredible to note that the Suns have an 18-0 record over the last two seasons. #CFC100 Nick Cross made his impression early and often with the help teammateΒ #CFC100Β Semba Mbasela. This is no one-and-done program that’s for sure. Already looking ahead next year for their 6th consecutive win which would tie the record in Saskatchewan high school football with theΒ Balfour Tech Redmen fromΒ 1960-65.

No. 7 St. Paul’s Crusaders (9-0, 0-1) 17
No. 14 Vincent Massey Trojans (8-1, 1-0) 8
The St. Paul’s Crusaders as once again the Anavet Bowl Champions. This will be the program’s 10th division 1 title. The Crusaders finished their season with a 9-0 season and never seemed to take their foot off the gas. The only team that gave them any sort of grief was the Vincent Massey Trojans who were, again, worthy opponents in this last matchup. The Trojans were last year’s champions and we think the Crusader’s were going to have none of that again. From what we heard, “St. Paul’s simply made the plays when they had to, got out of poor field position and didn’t turn the ball over”. They also “neutralized the highly rated players on Vincent Massey including QB Dueck, REC Gassama and DE Burley.” St. Paul’s, #CFC100 Shae Weekes had an outstanding game along with teammate Riley Naujoks. Weekes was named the game’s most outstanding player. Both of these team’s had fantastic seasons and kept us all waiting for this last and final matchup. We can only wait in anticipation for when these two teams will meet again next year. Congratulations to both! (To watch some of the bowl highlights, click here.)
No. 8 Terry Fox Ravens (7-0, 0-2)
First round playoff bye
On to the next one… Comets win 26-16 and move on to the Tier 1 Provincial Semi Final next weekend. #RedNation pic.twitter.com/5sVvIuOqPU

No. 9 Henry Wise Wood Warriors (6-1, 0-1) 16
No. 37 Raymond Comets (6-1, 0-2) 26
Raymond is a traditional powerhouse in southern Alberta who got back to their winning ways this past weekend with the victory over the Henry Wise Wood Warriors from Calgary in the provincial quarter-finals. This 6-1 team surprised many of us as we thought that the Warriors had this one in the bag. But the Comets thought otherwise. From what we can piece together, the Comets were slow starters and scored just before halftime. Jeremy Fairbanks got the party started, followed by Taylor Hillyer with the touchdown. QB Dan Wilde connected with Dan Wilde for another touchdown. This seemed to give the Comets the momentum and came out in the second half ready to put the game away. Even though the score was close throughout, the Warriors just couldn’t capitalize when they needed to and Raymond continued trudge forward after a few big plays. This young team will go on to face St. Francis in next week’s provincial semi-final and they are going to need a lot more then momentum to get them past the Browns.
And there you have it! Back 2 Back City Champions! Congrats Boys! On to the Provincial semifinal, next weekend. #GoBrownsGo pic.twitter.com/du9x2iZ0VK

No. 12 St. Francis Browns (6-1, 1-0) 20
No. 41 Notre Dame Pride (6-2, 0-1) 10
In Calgary, this was the game we were all waiting for. The Browns did not disappoint, even though some were shaken when they were taken out by the Henry Wise Wood Warriors earlier in the season. After that loss, we believe it lite the fire under you-know-where and the Browns got back to basics and the ultimate goal of being the city champions once again. From what we can see when reading the twitter feed, the Browns scored first and it was 10-0 at the start of the 2nd quarter. Notre Dame answered with a 60 yard punt return and the score was 10-7 going into the half. It wasn’t a good way to start the second half with a pick 6 for the Browns, bringing the score to 17-7. At the end of the 3rd the score remained. the Pride managed to get a field goal in the middle of the 4th, but the Browns answered with a field goal of their own bringing the score to 20-10 and the end of the ball game.
No. 22 Notre Dame Jugglers (5-1, 2-1)
First round playoff bye
No. 29 South Delta Sun Devils (4-2, 2-0) 53
Handsworth Royals (3-0) 7
South Delta beat Handsworth by relying on a rushing attack that left the Royals seeing blue after they rushed for 322 yards at 12.88 yards per carry, scoring 4 touchdowns. The Devils also threw the ball for 256 yards and 2 touchdowns. One would say this was an offensive explosion. The Sun Devils went in at the half up 39-0 and put it on cruz in the second half. This makes us think that the Sun Devils are coming together at the perfect time.
No. 31Β Tantramar Regional Titans (9-0) 30
Leo Hayes (5-0) 20
Tantramar beat an undefeated Leo Hayes team in the 2016 Provincial final 30-20 scoring 17 points in the 4th quarter to overcome a seven point deficit. The Titans relied on a dominate running game that churned out 440 yards rushing on 57 carries. This running attack is the only thing that saved the Titans undefeated season and allowed them to become provincial champions. This 19-game winning streak for the Titans has been a fairy tale two years. From what we can ascertain, the Titans have outscored their opponents 404 to 46 this season. #CFC100 newcomer, RB Aidan O’Neal, rushed for 250 yards. However, O’Neal had to work for those yards as Leo Hayes were 100% ready to contain and manage this speedy running back. And they almost did it as they were up 20-13 deep into the 4th quarter. In that final quarter drive, O’Neal managed to bring the score up to 20-20 and then Same Alward propelled them forward with touchdown and Aaron Rose put the icing on the cake as he completed 3 for 3 to finish the game at 30-20. The Titans defense managed to shutdown the Leo Hayes offense long enough to get the victory.

No. 33 Harry Ainlay Titans (8-1, 1-0) 8
Notre Dame Cougars (8-1) 27
The Notre Dame Cougars won the Red Deer City Final earlier in the month and have turned their attention towards the provincial championship. With their convincing win over the Harry Ainlay Titans, we were a bit surprised and began to wonder who these Notre Dame Cougars were. We can see that they are a good, solid football team who likes to rely on their running game for most of the offense. However, they can go to the air if they need to. While we are not sure what happened in this game as news has not come to us at press time, but from the score of 27-8, these Cougars did a lot to unseat one of our previous #CFC50 teams. We had assumed that the Titans only competition would be Bev Facey, but were we wrong. Regardless, we congratulate Harry Ainlay on a terrific season and we are curious to see just what happens and by how much when this team meets the Falcons.
Not the finish we worked so hard for, but a great season nonetheless. You should all be proud. Heads up! TeamPride on three… pic.twitter.com/sbvrbSpqQD

No. 35Β Cobequid Ed. Centre Cougars (9-1) 2
Sir John A MacDonald Flames (7-1) 33
Cobequid Ed. Centre lost to SJA, 33-2 in the Tier 1 provincial semi-final. Sir John A have this nifty little secret RB, Adam Bennett, who we are told, had 171 yards rushing on 28 carries with 2 touchdowns, and also chipped in 54 receiving yards on 2 receptions. Josh Pinfold had 69 receiving yards and 2 receiving touchdowns, as well as 12 rushing yards, 110 punt return yards, and an interception on defense. Chris Duplisea had 172 yards passing with 2 passing touchdowns and no interceptions. Donald Blue led the defense with 5 tackles. On the CEC side, Tyler Ball had 7 tackles and Emmitt Fitzgerald registered 6 tackles. Nate Lang-Langille and Seamus Meagher both had 4 tackles. Quarterback, Dustin Pettigrew had 64 yards on 7 carries as well as 5 tackles. We congratulate CEC on a great season and can’t wait for next year!

No. 38 New Westminster Hyacks (4-2, 2-1) 62
Mt. Boucherie Bears (3-4) 10
The Hyacks got off to a quick start when they scored on their first offensive possession. However, for the remainder of the first half, the Hyacks let the Bears stay in the game.”We started off very fast, but Boucherie fought hard and were able to get back in it in the 2nd quarter. We were able to put up 2 quick scoresβ late in the half and roll from there” said Coach Farhan Lalji. On the Bears side, they were able to sustain some drives in the second quarter thanks to a power run game, however, once New West figured that out, the Bears struggled offensively and then began to turn the ball over which pretty much decided the game as it got away from them. New West faces Abbotsford next week in the provincial quarter-final. Coach Farhan says, “I was very pleased with the play of our defense as we were able to win the battle up front, and we will need to be even better next week against an Abbotsford team with some exceptional athletes.”

We were unable to get a hold of the details, but the Fighting Irish will move forward to play Notre Dame in the quarter-final round.
