Anthony Horth always seeking to surpass himself

Whenever Anthony Horth joins a new team, he always enters as not only one of the younger players on the team, but also one of the smaller ones at his position. His age nor his size dictate his skill, but it gives him extra motivate to break down any misconceptions about him.

Standing at 5’11, 250lbs, the centre said that being this size means he must be able to compete to surpass his own abilities. He certainly impressed the coaches at the Team Québec selection camp, having been selected to the 2017 Football Canada Cup winning club. “I think I had surpassed the expectations they had of me,” Horth said. He added that winning the gold medal was the highlight of his football career so far.

Gold is not the only thing that Horth has won. In 2017, he was named as an RSEQ all-star and received a team offensive MVP award. At the 2016 Spaulding Cup, he was named as an all-star. In 2014 and 2015, he was named as a special teams MVP. Two years prior, he was a defensive line MVP. In 2010, while at the Tim Hortons All-Star Game, he was named as a defensive line MVP as well.

(The Tim Hortons All-Star Game is an annual game hosted by the Montréal Alouettes at McGill Stadium. The game is hosted in conjunction with Football Québec’s Excellence Program. Players who are selected have also had to be participating in three evaluation camps for the Team Québec U18 team.)

Entering his ninth season, Horth loves playing as a centre. He said that what he enjoys most is bring able to block everyone who is on the field and that despite his position, he touches the ball on every play.

“Football is my passion. It’s the sport that I can use the maximum of my abilities,” Horth added.

Horth started football when his parents introduced him to the sport. They have never left his side. He said they are his inspiration because “they are always there for me.” He also looks up to all of his coaches, who he said have taught him everything he knows.

Having played with Les Scorpions d’Armand-Corbeil (RSEQ) in high school, he will be joining Les Nordiques du Collège Lionel-Groulx (RSEQ Division 2) for his cégep career. He will be suiting up as a centre and a guard with the team. His overall goal is to play football in university. He plans on training more to become ready for the next level.
