Gaels add size, skill to lines

Queen’s adds one provincial commit and one out-of-province commit to their 2019 class.

Ryan Berta, an offensive lineman from St. Jean de BrΓ©beuf Catholic Secondary School, and Andrew Mullins-Grant, a defensive lineman from St. Paul’s School, will be battling in the trenches with the Queen’s Gaels.

Ryan Berta

Ryan Berta of Hamilton, Ontario, is heading to Kingston. β€œI think Queen’s is the right fit for me. I felt comfortable when I was there and it felt like it’s a place (that) I can achieve my goals,” Berta said. β€œProgram wise, it has beautiful facilities with amazing coaches.”

He added that, β€œAnother big reason for my commitment was offensive line coach Matt Nesbitt. I feel like he can help me become the best player possible being a top-tier offensive line coach.”

The 6’3, 300lbs guard has played with both the Hamilton Hurricanes (OFC) and the St. Jean de BrΓ©beuf Braves (HWCAA). He also participated in the Fox 40 Prospect Challenge. He was β€˜offensive player of the year’ with the Hurricanes last summer and he also won a Division 2 championship with the Braves.

Andrew Mullins-Grant

When Andrew Mullins-Grant joins the Gaels, he knows the team won’t exclude the β€œstudent” part of student-athlete. β€œI was excited to see that Queen’s not only values excellence within their football program, but they value academic excellence as well,” Mullins-Grant said, who is interested in economics.

β€œI can’t wait to get to work with the new, relatively young coaching staff,” added the 6’2, 310lb defensive tackle. β€œThey are cooking up something special and I am very excited to be a part of it.”

Mullins-Grant is originally from MontrΓ©al, QuΓ©bec, where he played with North Shore Football and the Selwyn House School. He then joined the St. Paul’s Big Red (NEPSAC). He was a 2018 all-Evergreen League and was am honourable mention for an all-NEPSAC.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
