Mounties defeat Huskies in exhibition play

The Mount Allison Mounties started the 2012 AUS football season on the right foot Saturday with a 16-10 exhibition win over the perennial AUS powerhouse Saint Mary’s Huskies. The win came in front of 1,308 elated fans at Mount Allison’s MacAulay Field.

On a day when both teams emptied their benches and tried to give everyone a look prior to the start of the season, defense ruled the day with only 3 touchdowns being scored. After 13 minutes of scoreless play, Saint Mary’s opened the scoring when Brett Lauther connected for a 27 yard field goal at 12:43 of the 1st quarter.
Mount Allison took the lead when rookie running back Jordan Botel of Prince George, BC scampered in a for a 12 yard touchdown. Alec Curtis connected for the point after, giving the Mounties a 7-3 advantage with 8 minutes remaining in the first half. The Mounties drive was setup by an interception by 2011 AUS All-Star Matt Kenny moments earlier. The Huskies regained the lead when Jean Legault found Todd Speakman in the end zone for an 8 yard score at 10:10 of the 2nd quarter. The first half ended with the Huskies leading 10-7.

Mount Allison was the only team to score in the 2nd half, first when 2nd year quarterback Alex Field connected with Emmanuel Musangu from 8 yards out at 4:14 of the 3rd quarter. The Mounties were given a short field after Donovan Saunders busted open a punt return for 46 yards. Saunders later provided a second punt return run of 40 plus yards.

With the score 14-10 Mounties, Mount Allison continued their tenacious defense and forced Saint Mary’s to take a team safety at 13:30 of the 3rd quarter. Both teams were kept off the scoreboard during the 4th quarter and the game ended 16-10 for the Mounties. The Mounties defense played tough throughout the whole game, with both the first string and second string units holding the Saint Mary’s offense at bay. Second year punter Kyle McLean also had a strong day, kicking several long punts and recovering one of his own punts at one point.
The Mounties now turn their attention to the regular season, when they open the season on Friday, September 7th at 7PM against the StFX X-Men. The Mounties then travel to McGill on September 14th, before returning home to once again host StFX for Homecoming on Saturday, September 22nd at 2PM.
