Team Alberta Hawaii Wins!

Drew Bexson from Holy Rosary H.S. in Lloydminster scored two touchdowns as a select team of Alberta high school football players defeated King Kamehameha High School in Maui 14-7 on Wednesday, August 18 in a controlled scrimmage.

The event cumulated a week long experience for the Alberta players who came to the Hawaiian Islands to train for the upcoming season as well as experience the local culture and compete against a local team in a controlled scrimmage. This marks the fifth year of the Team Alberta Hawaii program operated by Football Alberta but the first time the team has scored more touchdowns than their host school.

Alberta opened the scoring in the second series on a 16 yard run by Bexson set up by a long catch from James Read from Holy Trinity Academy in Okotoks, but went to halftime tied 7-7 after giving up a long pass and run for a TD on King Kamehameha’s second series. The last half was played to a standstill before QB Colby Plikett out of Cold Lake hooked up with Cardston’s Cody Chipman on a 35 yard pass to the King Kamehameha 5 yard line early in the fourth series. Two plays later Bexson took it over for Alberta’s second TD. From their the defense stood tall and never let the Hawaiians inside the 40 yard line the rest of the scrimmage. Tristan Nwagwu out of St. Mary’s in Calgary had a monster game at rush end recording 8 tackles including 5 QB sacks. Griffin Cymbaluk from Wetaskiwin and Aaron Rommelle from Willow Creek in Claresholm both added interceptions and Jordan Arkko from St. Francis Xavier in Edmonton recovered a fumble during the game to help the cause.
