Chilliwack: JB Red Giants battle for first, Peewee’s pitch a shutout

BANTAM

The Chillwack JB Red Giants squared off with the first place Blue Giants this past weekend in a highly entertaining game.

Even though the Red Giants ended up on the wrong side of a 20-14 game, they had an opportunity to win the game in the closing seconds but failed to punch it in.
Some of the stand outs on offense were: Cory Armstrong with some impressive inside running, Colton Derouin with a great reception and Thijs Duinveld punched in another touchdown. Ryan Connolly also had a solid game scoring a touchdown and hauling in a Kirkland Kennedy pass for a crucial first down late in the game.

On defense, the Red Giants kept the high scoring Blue Giants under wraps for most of the game, giving up only 3 touchdowns to a team that has been averaging 6 per game. Duncan McCracken held his ground all game and never once let the opponent get outside with their lethal running game.

JB Blue

The JB Blue Giants (7-0-1) took another step toward and undefeated season and secured first place overall with a 20-14 defeat of the Chilliwack Red Giants. The Blue Giants narrowly eked out the win with a goal line stand in the final minute of play. Running back Tristan Davis had a game for the ages with 24 carries for 229 yards and 2 TDs. Mario Brizuela, Hunter Larocque and Tyler Sprott also carried the ball for the Blue Giants but it was Davis’ hard inside running that set the tone for the game and effectively ran the clock in the second half. Braydon Winger and Darwin Biamonte led a Blue Giants offensive line that controlled the line of scrimmage and opened great holes for Davis. Unfortunately there were also numerous missed assignments and penalties on the Blue Giants offense, stalling several drives. “We didn’t play our game”, noted head coach Mike Derksen. “Just too many mental errors and problems with execution. Having said that, the Red Giants did play a great game.” Derksen was particularily impressed with the way his defense tightened up when it mattered most on a third and goal from the Blue Giants 1 yard line. “We had a huge stop to win the game – and I’m proud of the way the defense responded in the end.” Linebackers Emerson Smith and Cole Wood recovered Red Giants’B fumbles while Larocque had a stellar day as Safety. Defensive tackle Chris Derksen had a sack and was involved in several tackles, constantly penetrating the Red Giants offensive line. The Blue Giants travel to Mission to face the 9ers this Saturday and Langley next week before entering the playoffs November 13.

PEEWEE

In the peewee battle for Chilliwack the Blue Giants defeated the Red Giants 25-0. The Blue Giants offense, shut out for the three previous weeks, got back on track with 3 TDs from RB Wyatt Uzick and 1 from RB Gabe Mannes. A week after posting a decisive 28-0 victory over the Mission 9ers, the Red Giants offense, despite the outstanding efforts of running backs Ayden Harvey, Kobe Poole and Haden Orsachuk were held off the score sheet.Passes were caught by Eric VanDerWerff and Noah Dubosoff for bug gains but it was still not enough The final score does not reflect the strong Pee Wee Red defense. Drive after drive was stopped by a strong d-line. The red defense was able to put up a great goal line stance stopping blue from scoring from within the 5 yard line thanks to strong plays from linebackers Ayden Harvey, Miguel Wood, Kobe Pool, Jonathon Zandberg and Moses Bird/Ortiz. The Red team was able to stop all two point conversion attempts due to some great pressure from half backs Ethan Pearce, Ryan Clayton and Kyle Webber.

The game came down to two or three big plays set up by excellent blocks by Blue Giants linemen and backs including Jake Troyan, Emilio Pineda and Ethan Mastin. In addition to carrying the ball 15 times for 178 yards and 3 TDs on offense, Uzick had 8 solo tackles and 4 assists on defense. The Red Giants defense, except for the noted breakdowns, was very solid the rest of the game.

On defense the Blue Giants had outstanding performances by Michael Lengert (5 tackles), Emilio Pineda (4 tackles), Spencer Breslin (4 tackles) and Evan McCracken (4 tackles). Bradley Langlois added a late interception for the Blue Giants to preserve the shutout. The Red Giants defense…add a bunch here.

The win keeps the Blue Giants in 3rd spot and the Red Giants in 4th. Both teams will make the playoffs this year despite coming from the only association in the league that splits their talent into two teams. The Red Giants play North Langley at Townsend Park on Saturday while the Blue Giants travel to Mission to take on the 9ers.

Saturday was a tough day. Head Coach Sean Dallas says, β€˜I think we really defeated ourselves. We weren’t taking care of our own assignments. We did come together in the 4[SUP]th[/SUP] quarter though and need to play like that the whole game.’
The score was 36-12 for the Meadow Ridge Gold Knights. Andrew Locke led the defence with 5 solo tackles and 7 assisted tackles. Justin Crooks had a spectacular game on both sides of the ball making great blocks on offence. Jaylen Edwards rushed for 122 yards for 2 TD’s late in the 4[SUP]th[/SUP] quarter which was too little too late.
The Chilliwack Giants Atom Blue now sit at 3-6 with one game to go. To make the 4[SUP]th[/SUP] and final playoff position, Blue Must defeat Mission Oct. 30[SUP]th[/SUP] in Mission. Mission now sits at 3-5 with a very difficult game remaining vs Meadow Ridge Blue Knights (#2)
The Mission and Giants game should be a good one.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
