McMaster defeats Queen’s in OUA quarter-final (stats)

HAMILTON, Ont. (October 30, 2010) – The Queen’s Gaels will be unable to defend their Vanier Cup title as the No. 7 McMaster Marauders defeated the Queen’s Gaels 40-19 in the OUA quarter-final football playoff game.

The Marauders (7-2) scored 30 unanswered points to take a 30-3 lead over Queen’s (3-6) in the third quarter lifting them into the OUA Semifinal against the Western Mustangs set for next Saturday.

McMaster’s Kyle Quinlan of South Woodslee, Ont., threw four touchdowns and scored another on the ground. Quinlan was 18 for 26 passing for 361 yards in the win.

β€œIt was a tough way to end… you always hope for better, but we came up against a good team, β€œsaid Gaels head coach Pat Sheahan. β€œWe really had to play our best to be in the game, unfortunately we weren’t able to do that despite our best effort – it wasn’t a lack of effort.”

β€œMoving forward these are the kinds of days we learn from,” continued Sheahan. β€œThe kids skin gets a little thicker and we’ll learn from this year. We’ll be back.”

Queen’s fifth-year running back Jimmy Therrien of Montreal was the Gaels top offensive performer rushing for 162 yards on 28 carries punching in a touchdown at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Queen’s QB Justin Chapdelaine of Abbotsford, B.C. was 12 for 25 with 125 yards. He also contributed 79 yards rushing. Devan Sheahan as the Gaels top receiver on six catches for 69 yards.

Marauder Kevin D’Hollander of London, Ont., was on the end of two Quinlan strikes including a 39-yard touchdown score that put the game at 28-3 late in the third quarter. He finished with 133 yards receiving.

Quinlan also threw a touchdown pass to Matthew Peressini of Hannon, Ont., and Joey Nemet of Burlington, Ont.

Dan Village of Abbotsford, B.C. connected on a 31-yard field goal at 10:53 of the first quarter to give Queen’s an early 3-0 lead.

McMaster scored 14 points in just over a minute to take a 14-3 into the half.

Quinlan opened the scoring for McMaster at 13:18 of the second quarter with a one-yard QB sneak. After a Gaels three-and-out, Quinlan connected with Nemet on a 14-yard pass to make the score 14-3.

Up until the McMaster outbreak, the game was relatively quiet with neither team stepping up. At halftime, both teams had committing three turnovers each.

The Gaels finished with seven turnovers including two fumbles, two interceptions and two turnovers on downs. McMaster had two fumbles and one turnover on downs.

The teams also traded safeties in the game.

Queen’s had pinned McMaster in their end zone twice but McMaster head coach Stefan Ptaszek elected to have his QB punt on second down. Quinlan racked up 120 yards punting including a 79-yard punt with the Gaels not defending for the kick.

NOTES: This was Queen’s second loss to McMaster this season having dropped the opening game of the season 23-18 … McMaster evens their playoff record against the Gaels to 2-2… Queen’s beat McMaster 32-6 last season in their OUA semifinal which was the first of Queen’s Vanier Cup championship run… Wind played a factor in today’s game at a blustery 37km/h from the southwest.
