Ontario High School Playoff preview & overview (Nov 5)

This is a brief synopsis of the Ontario High School football playoff bowl series. The info is based on data received up to and including November 5th.

Golden Horseshoe Region

HALTON
Notre Dame (CFC #23)– Fellow undefeated Halton team Holy Trinity (CFC #18) stands in the way of a repeat . Winner could easily be the best team in the province.

NIAGARA
Lakeshore Catholic (CFC #11) – have already qaulifed to represent Niagara at the Golden Horsehoe Bowl playdowns after victory over St. Paul last night.

HAMILTON CATHOLIC
Cardinal Newman (CFC ‘HM’)– Hamilton Catholic semi’s yet to be played; however Newman and More appear to be the teams destined to meet for league honours. Slight edge to Newman.

HAMILTON PUBLIC
Sir Allan MacNab (CFC ’20’)-– Now three time defending champions of Hamilton Public with a date against Lakeshore Catholic looming.

PEEL
St. Marguerite d’Youville (CFC ‘HM’) – If they don’t win a sub .500 regular season team represents Peel in the playdowns. Meet St. Thomas Aquinas in final of Peel after they upset defending champs St. Marcellinus 16 to 7 on thursday

Metro Region

Metro Bowl Playdowns
Thursday 18-Nov 12:30 Durham vs. Independents @ Esther Shiner
Thursday 18-Nov 3:30 York vs. Toronto @ Esther Shiner
Wednesday 24-Nov 8:00 Winners @ Rogers Centre

INDEPENDENTS
St. Andrews (CFC #8) – The Aurora machine should roll over UCC but props to UCC on their historic wins over St. Michaels College in both league play and playoffs. The question is which players will be eligible to play in the bowl playdowns?

DURHAM

Wilson (CFC #25)– Tight win over Holy Trinity (CFC #21)sets up interesting first round playoff games: as both Pickering and St. Mary led Wilson and Holy Trinity during regular season play before eventually losing by less than a touchdown.

Playoffs
Tuesday 9-Nov 12:00 Pickering Wilson @ Wilson
Tuesday 9-Nov 12:00 St. Mary Holy Trinity @ Holy Trinity
Saturday 13-Nov 3:00 Tier 1 FINALS @ Clarington Fields

TORONTO
Chaminade (CFC #12)– Undefeated Leaside and Richview (despite earlier shocker loss to Silverthorn) are still very much in the mix.

YORK
Huron Heights (CFC #13) – Edged by King City, who they meet for the championship, in league play however King City owns three consecutive Junior titles. Huron Heights will not take this game lightly following last years championship game loss to Markham.

National Capital Region

OTTAWA
Ashbury – Defeated defending champion St. Peter in regular season play then fell to St. Matthew in final week of the season. Three team race?

KINGSTON
Holy Cross (CFC ‘HM’)– Two games clear in regular season play. Perennial Kingston power house Frontenac captures the sixth and final playoff spot with a 2-4 record.

KAWARTHA
Fenelon Falls – Their Junior phenom from two years ago (Brandon Coy) helped them to give Crestwood their first league loss since 2003 by a stunning 28 points to avenge an earlier loss to the same Mustangs. These two teams were so dominating that they threw the remaining teams out of the playoffs. Crestwood’s streak of consecutive titles dating back to the last millennium appears to be coming to an end!

SIMCOE

Barrie North (CFC ‘HM’)– Only undefeated team in Simcoe County however each of Bear Creek, Banting and Eastview, each of whom have only one loss, are in the semis with them.

BAY OF QUINTE
Moira – Meet Centennial for the championship in a David vs. Goliath battle. Centennial will probably regain their title which they have gone two years without but the heart has to hope that the little guy prevails (split two in regular season play; Moira does have home field advantage).
November 6th, Championship, Centennial vs. Moira

LANARK RENFREW

Smiths Falls (CFC ‘HM’) – Undefeated in Lanark Renfrew league play. Arnprior, who lost to Smiths Falls by two in league play, could upset.

LEEDS GRENVILLE
Brockville – Every team in Leeds and Grenville league lost at least one game.

SEAWAY

St. Joseph (CFC ‘HM’)– Only unbeaten team in Seaway league

CSDCEO
Casselman, Embrun, La Citadelle – CSDCEO first year league had three way tie for title. Do not play in National Capital Bowl playdowns.

Northern Region

ALGOMA
Superior Heights (Sault) – Meet first place finisher St. Basil for the City title. This is the school that opened when both Sir James Dunn (defending Northern Bowl Champions) and Bawatang were closed. Took them awhile to start winning however they did beat St. Basil in league play and they are looking stronger each week. CFC fans are upset none of these teams are ranked.

THUNDER BAY
St. Patrick – Handed Hammarskjold first loss of regular season in final week to apparently capture group honours.

ALGONQUIN (NORTH BAY)

West Ferris (CFC ‘HM’) – Undefeated and annihilated second place Algonquin by 45 points in regular season play. Will be most likely be in over their heads when they meet the eventual Sault Champions.

SUDBURY
Lasalle (CFC ‘HM’) – Undefeated in league play and have won every game by double digits. Sudbury league does not compete in Bowl playdowns.

Western Region

WINDSOR
Herman (CFC #3)– dominating Windsor again and really want to avenge last years stunning loss to Northern (Sarnia).

LAMBTON

Northern (CFC ‘HM’) – Perennial Lambton champs have already secured league title and have yet to win by less than double digits.

KENT
Ursuline College – Captured league honours despite a 2-4 regular season record. Next up: Northern (Sarnia) as the clock is about to strike midnight.

THAMES (LONDON)
St. Thomas Aquinas (CFC ‘HM’) – Undefeated in league play however don’t be surprised if B group teams (London Central and Catholic Central) upset. This competitive league has seen the B group do well in post season play over the past couple of years.

THAMES (SOUTHEAST)
East Elgin – Undefeated in league play and two games clear of runner up.

BRANT
Assumption – Only blemish was a tie with Pauline Johnson. Play St. John’s for league title.

BLUEWATER
St. Mary – Attempting to put an end to Saugeen’s dominance in the Bluewater league. Meet for the championship and St. Mary did win the league game.

GUELPH
John F. Ross (CFC ‘HM’)– Yet to taste defeat in District 4/10 play. Guelph with only loss to Ross (13-0) could argue.

WATERLOO

Resurrection (CFC #15) – Just keep on winning however politics will keep them out of the Western Bowl playdowns.

Cross Golden Horseshoe / Western Region

HALIMAND-NORFOLK
Waterford – Undefeated and closest game to date decided by 32 points. League does not advance to Bowl festival playdowns.
