Despite Ephard’s 200-plus, Clan fall to Humboldt (winless first NCAA season)

Arcata, CA – Saturday proved to be a disappointing end to the 2010 season for the Simon Fraser University Clan football team, as the Clan gave up 28 first quarter points en route to a 66-20 loss to the Humboldt State University Lumberjacks. The Clan end their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference season with a 1-9 record, including 0-8 in conference play.

The loss negated another outstanding afternoon for SFU running back Gabe Ephard (North Vancouver, B.C.), who went over the 200 total yard plateau, rushing 31 times for 170 yards and one touchdown, while adding two receptions for 58 yards to total 228 yards. HSU’s Lyndon Rowells rushed for five touchdowns against the Clan, finishing with 210 yards on the ground, as Humboldt’s offence totaled 548 yards, including 364 yards rushing.

By the end of the first quarter Humboldt’s Rowells had scored rushing touchdowns of 22 and 30 yards, while Jonathon Faraimo scored on a 25-yard interception return and Daniel Wyatt added an eight-yard touchdown plunge. By halftime, HSU extended their advantage to 38-6, with SFU answering with an eight-yard touchdown run by Greg Bowcott with 5:26 left in the second quarter while Rowells added his third touchdown of the day on a 14-yard run before the half.

Rowells added two more touchdowns in the third quarter, including a 71-yarder, while quarterback Mike Proulx connected on a 25-yard strike to lead 59-6 after 45 minutes of play. SFU added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, with Bowcott running in from five yards out, while Ephard plunged in from the four-yard line. HSU backup quarterback Chris Bolt tossed a 24-yard touchdown to give the β€˜Jacks a 66-20 win.

Bowcott finished the game 8-for-23 for 90 yards and four interceptions, while adding 60 yards on the ground rushing. Linebackers Andrew Marshall and Casey Chin finished with 11 and ten tackles respectively.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
