New Challenges for Toronto Argonauts on the Eve of a New 2024 Season

Toronto Argonauts fans recently got a good raid during free agency this offseason. So now they are considering who can fill some key positions. Those who follow football know how many teams have already lost their top stars during the season.

Quarterback

It’s no secret that the Argos desperately need a QB1 for at least half of the season due to the suspension of their starter, Chad Kelly. Currently, the team can get several candidates who are holdovers from 2023. Among them are the legendary Cameron Dukes and Brian Scott. Rookie Hunter Rocket also has a chance. Given the amount of playing time and experience gained, Dukes is the most likely candidate for the role of quarterback. 

However, it is still too early to guess since each of the three candidates has every chance for this role. This situation has already caused quite a stir among Toronto Argonauts fans. Fullback

What all Argos fans have been waiting for has finally happened: converted linebacker Brandon Culver is returning to the starting lineup. He became a true legend last year when he successfully completed nine special teams tackles. At that time, he was not what would be called a “featured position” in the offense.

Receiver

The Argos currently have very important players back in the starting lineup. First of all, this applies to Damonte Coxey and the top player, Davaris Daniels. What’s more, the team received a significant new addition in the form of Rashid Bailey. It was this player who signed a contract as a free agent after excellent performances in Winnipeg. Rashid excelled as a pass catcher and main blocker. 

As for the National contingent, it also sees the return of David Angerer III and Deion Brissett. Both players have shown very good results throughout 2023. Offensive and Defensive Lines

This is probably one of the top changes for the Argonauts. The fact is that the entire starting five of the sensational 2023 is returning. First of all, this concerns the star Dejon Allen, who received the title of the most outstanding offensive player of the CFL last year. 

However, it remains unclear if this division will be as formidable as it was earlier in the day, given the loss of Dewayne Hendricks and Brandon Barlow to Hamilton. Also, Jake Ceresna arrived via the Gittens Jr. trade with Edmonton. Prior to that, he was named the Elks’ Most Outstanding Defensive Player for two consecutive years.

Linebackers

Wynton McManis is back in the game and will be a key player, while Jonathan Jones will be the starter in the middle. Those who follow his activities know that he spent the last two seasons as a rotational and reserve player. Toronto already signed Quincy Mauger (free agent) in the offseason. Before that, he managed to play in this position for the BC Lions.

Defensive Backs

With Jamal Peters and Kwan’tez Stigers gone, the Argos are in urgent need of top cornerbacks. Tarvarus McFadden has impressive experience, so he will likely be a significant addition to the lineup. As for Benji Franklin, he may have an inside track at another corner. At the same time, veteran Maurice Carnell IV is also eager to show everything he can after a long layoff due to injury in 2023. 

Among other things, Royce Matchey returns to safety. Also, Mason Pearce broke out last season when he successfully moved to midfield. On top of that, the Argos have DaSean Amos in their arsenal, who is fit enough to fill his spot. Like Maurice Carnell IV, he did not play almost half of the previous season because of an injury.
