Class of 2027 LB Cal Crawford out of Bill Crothers in Markham, Ontario took a different path into football than a lot of players chasing the CFC Prospect Game on TSN.
He did not grow up in pads from a young age. Crawford admits he arrived to football late compared to many of his peers with soccer originally the priority, specifically as a goalkeeper competing in the OPDL system. But football kept pulling him back in every time he watched it, studied it, or played it.

Some of his earliest memories involve sitting beside his dad watching football on television, completely locked into the game. Later came Madden 13 on Xbox 360, where he started learning concepts, formations, and tendencies long before he ever stepped onto a real field himself. Then came flag football with friends, which finally gave him the confidence to convince his mom to let him try tackle football at Bill Crothers in Grade 9.
Since then, Crawford has attacked the sport with the urgency of someone trying to make up for lost time.
That mentality helped him become Rookie of the Year in 2023 before earning back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year honours at Bill Crothers in 2024 and 2025 while serving as a team captain. His junior season numbers tell the story of a player constantly around the football with 50 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, five pass breakups, plus offensive production at tight end with 15 catches, 400 yards, and three touchdowns.
Crawford studies film obsessively and takes pride in understanding tendencies instead of relying solely on athleticism. That combination of preparation and physicality is a major reason several schools have already started building relationships with him, including Queenβs, Waterloo, York, Laurier, U of T, and Bishopβs, where he recently completed an unofficial visit.
Now he heads to Hamilton looking to prove he belongs among the countryβs best.
