Football almost happened by accident. Deak bounced between sports depending on the season. Hockey, soccer, basketball, golf, and track all filled his schedule because his parents believed in always staying active. Basketball was originally his favourite, and football barely entered the conversation until the day before Grade 9 started.
Then a neighbourhood barbecue changed everything. One casual conversation with a family friend led to him hearing about tryouts starting after school the next day at Holy Cross. Deak figured he would give it a shot for fun. Three years later, he is preparing for the CFC Prospect Game on TSN after becoming one of Kingstonβs rising defensive backs.
Some athletes fall in love with football because of the spotlight or the attention. For Deak, the connection came from the culture around the game. The structure, the discipline, the brotherhood, and the responsibility of being accountable to teammates quickly became part of his identity.
The Kingston native credits football with giving him focus and a sense of belonging, and those traits helped him earn the Coachβs Choice Award following his Grade 10 season at Holy Cross.
Now he heads to Hamilton looking to make big plays, represent Kingston football, and show coaches across Canada exactly how far he has come in a short amount of time.
