IFAF: A look at the host country Austria, Canada’s Monday opponent (video)

Here is a look at host country Austria.

The history of American Football in Austria started a little over 30 years ago. In 1983 Austria sent its National Team to the very first European Championship – and finished last. When Austria could not qualify for the final round in 2001, the AFBΓ– (the Austrian Federation of American Football) decided to dissolve the National Team and focus on its youth programs. The current situation of American Football in Austria is proof that this was the right decision.

Austria’s American Football teams regularly dominate international competitions. Teams from the Austrian Football League (AFL) regularly win the Euro Bowl, the most important international club tournament in European American Football and the Swarco Raiders won the title in 2011. The Austrian National Team takes part in the World Championship of American Football – not only because Austria hosts the tournament but because it finished in third place in the European Championship 2010 and qualified for the World Championship the conventional way.

The teams’ youth programs finally paid off in 2006 and resulted in the new National Team. Austria started in group C in the European Championship and fought its way up to group A. Hosting the fourth World Championship of American Football in Austria is the reward for all the hard work the players, coaches and functionaries put in.

Armando Ponce de Leon, Wide Receiver with the Graz Giants speaks for the whole team: “I am absolutely looking forward to take the field in a packed stadium. This really pushes you to new limits. The World Championship will be awesome!”

AFBΓ– President Michael EschlbΓΆck: “The World Championship is a great event with historic implications for our sport. We are looking forward to having a spectacular American Football party with guests from all over the world.”
