CFC ‘top 10’ Ontario Summer rankings: Varsity & Junior Varsity (Week 7) “Now or never”

Here is CFCs ranking of the top 10 Varsity & Junior Varsity teams in Ontario summer football. The two leagues that are eligible for this ranking are the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) & the Ontario Football Conference (OFC). These two leagues do not play against one another during the regular or playoff seasons.

A few changes have occurred in the ‘TOP 10’, as a result of week 7 game results and play.

VARSITY (Under 20)

1. (1) Essex Ravens (OVFL) – [6-0]

Played an undermanned Guelph Bears team this Saturday, who showed up with 18 players. Won 65 to 0. Travel to Halton to face arguable a more undermanned team this weekend.

2. (2) Burlington Stampeders (OFC) – [7-0]

Even without the services of a handful of players who are playing for Team Ontario West this week, the Stampeders cruised to a 43 to 3 victory over the Hamilton-Wentworth Panthers. Close out regular season play saturday against the Forest City Thunderbirds, and will stay undefeated, like Essex.

3. (3) Ottawa Myers Riders (OVFL) – [6-0]

As always, a ‘barn-burner’ against the Etobicoke Eagles, holding on for a 27 to 24 victory. Defense continues to lead the OVFL in points against…and you know, defense wins championships. Travel to Oshawa to take on the Hawkeyes this Saturday.

4. (4) Sault Ste. Marie Sabercats (OVFL) – [5-1]

QB Casey Wright had a big game throwing for 323 yards (26 of 38) and a pair of touchdowns. Iain Hutchinson continued his outstanding defensive play – maybe good enough for league defender of the year – with another interception. Host the Guelph Bears this weekend…hopefully more than 18 players make the trip.

5. (5) Hamilton Ironmen (OVFL) – [5-1]

Rebounded nicely after a loss to Sault Ste. Marie with a convincing 33 to 13 victory over the Brampton Bulldogs. Host the Bisons this weekend and play Halton the next…should finish season 7 and 1.

6. (7) Twin Cities Predators (OFC) – [6-1]

Shut out the Clarington Knights 38 to 0. Close the season against the third place Chatham-Kent Cougars which should be a good test going in to the playoffs. The Cougars are fighting for a playoff position. Teams played in week 1 with the Predators coming out victorious 22 to 9.

7. (8) Toronto Thunder (OVFL) – [4-2*]

Ran the ball well against a tough Grenadier team. Survived with a 31 to 26 victory. Play the upstart Cornwall Wildcats this weekend. Jayde Rowe and Chivon Gallagher continue to lead the #1 rushing attack in the province.

8. (9) Metro Toronto Wildcats (OVFL) – [4-2]

Defeated the Cumberland Panthers by a score of 21 to 13. Host the Markham Raiders this weekend.

9. (HM) Niagara Spears (OVFL) – [4-2]

Have played well all season losing two games to Sault Ste. Marie and Hamilton by a combined total of 13 points. Knocked off the Lions this weekend 23 to 10 and look for the same against a Mississauga Warrior team who have been playing better as of late. Should be a great match up.

10. (6) Ottawa Cumberland Panthers (OVFL) – [4-2]

Lost to the Metro Wildcats by a 21 to 13 score. Scoring points continues to be their number one challenge which they hope to rectify in the coming weeks.

Honourable Mentions:
Brampton Bulldogs (OVFL), Etobicoke Eagles (OVFL), Kingston Grenadiers (OVFL)

* Toronto Thunder defeated Etobicoke Eagles in week 1 action in overtime 36 to 30 but the game was forfeited due to ‘ineligible player participation’ – Etobicoke is awarded a 20 to 0 victory

JUNIOR VARSITY (U17)

1. (1) Ottawa Myers Riders (OVFL) – [6-0]

Continued their dominant play winning 64 to 0 against the Etobicoke Eagles Saturday. Continuing to play at this high level will be their biggest challenge going forward.

2. (2) Burlington Stampeders (OFC) – [7-0]

After defeating the Stallions 66 to 6 last week, they had to do it again, never an easy task in football. This time they managed a 38 to 13 victory and a lock on first place. End the season against the Oakville Titans. No junior varsity team in the OFC has been close to this team.

3. (3) Hamilton Ironmen (OVFL) – [6-0]

Defeated the Brampton Bulldogs in a spirited 34 to 21 game. QB Kyle Van Wynsberghe continues to lead this offense. An interesting match up versus the Toronto Thunder this weekend.

4. (4) Niagara Spears (OVFL) – [5-1]

Outlasted the Cambridge Lions 30 to 23 in the junior varsity game of the week. Things don’t get any easier when they play the Mississauga Warriors this weekend. Mark that one on your calendar.

5. (5) Mississauga Warriors (OVFL) – [5-1]

Defeated the Halton Cowboys 62 to 0. Battle the Niagara Spears in the junior varsity game of the week. Hope to use the home field to their advantage.

6. (6) Cambridge Lions (OVFL) – [5-2]

Lost their second game of the season to a top 5 CFC ranked squad, this time to the Niagara Spears 30 to 23. Travel to London this weekend to take on the Falcons, hoping to get back into the win column.

7. (10) Toronto Thunder (OVFL) – [4-2]

Defeated the Kingston Grenadiers this weekend by a score of 26 to 7. Play a top 5 team this weekend in the Hamilton Ironmen. Should be a good gauge of where this team is after two disappointing early season losses.

8. (10) Essex Ravens (OVFL) – [4-2]

Continue to improve, defeating a solid Guelph squad 30 to 0. Running back Eli Fera is getting better with every game as well as their offensive line. Travel to Halton to play the Cowboys.

9. (HM) Pickering Dolphins (OVFL) – [4-2]

Defeated the Markham Raiders 35 to 7 and improved their record to 4 and 2. Close out the season with Brampton and Oshawa, two winnable games.

10. (7) Kingston Grenadiers (OVFL) – [3-3]

After defeating Pickering and looking to extend their winning streak, they lost to the Toronto Thunder 26 to 7. Hope to rebound this weekend when they host the Newmarket Bucs.

NOTES:

b) Contributors to the ranking include CFC reporters, CIS coaches, OVFL & OFC scouts – the pre-season team of contributors totaled 15 individuals…which we anticipate to grow during the course of the season
c) the only rule difference between the two leagues is that the Varsity OFC division plays 3-downs where all others play 4-downs
d) We will rank the ‘top 10’ up until and including the final regular season weekend
e) Have fun
