OVFL, OMFL: Lions have varied success in Niagara region

Four different players scored touchdowns as the OMFL Jr. Varsity Cambridge Lions went to Grimsby and beat the Niagara Storm 34-3 Sunday.

After a scoreless 1st quarter dominated by defense and highlighted by a Logan Tellier (picture) fumble recovery, Dominik Valincic broke through for a 40 yard touchdown run. Thomas O’Leary and Alex Dueck provided blocks.

Niagara marched the ball down the field but the defense held on a goal-line stand and Niagara had to settle for a field goal. Cambridge then returned up the field finished the drive with a 25 yard pass to Tyler Gibner from Riley Pilkey for a score.

After a Jacob Boudreau interception the Lions had a short field to set up a touchdown by Thomas O’Leary.

Dominik Valincic scored his second touchdown of the game in the third quarter and Roly Tremblay finished the scoring with a major in the fourth quarter.

Thomas O’Leary kicked four conversions to complete the scoring for The Lions.

The last Niagara drive was stopped with an end-zone interception by Tyler Gibney. Gibney returned the ball to the 40 and only had one Niagara player to beat when he was pushed out of bounds.

The Lions are 5-2 on the season and are aiming to head into the playoffs in third place with a win in the season finale 8:30 Friday Night in Pickering.

The Ontario Varsity Football League Cambridge Lions Varsity team lost to Niagara Saturday 23-10.

Kyle Americano provided the only major for the Lion’s against the tough Niagara defense. Eric Hewitson added a 22 yard field goal.

On the defense, Jordan Kerr had an interception.

The 2-4 Lions finish their season with a game against the London Falcons 8:00 Saturday night in London.

The Junior Varsity Cambridge Lions of the Ontario Varsity Football League went into Niagara Saturday and came within’ a major of knocking off a very tough Niagara Spears team, who defeated the Lions 30-23.

Austin Gordon went 18-27 passing for 205 yards, including a touchdown pass to Adam Mueller.

Carlton Smith ran for 112 yards on 22 carries, averaging over 5 yards a carry and scoring a touchdown.

On defense, Kevin Pham had an interception and returned the ball 57 yards to complete the Cambridge scoring. Frank Thorne and Kyle Cole both had fumble recoveries.

The 5-2 Lions go into London to play the Falcons at 3:00 Saturday afternoon.

The Bantam Cambridge Lions football club rolled into Niagara on Saturday and improved their record to 4-1 with a 44-0 win over the Niagara Spears.

The Lions were led by Brayden Hill, who spread out his passing and hit three different receivers for touchdowns. Jackson Moore caught his second TD of the season with a 21 yard reception.

Kaden Jespersen had three receptions on the day averaging over 30 yards a catch, including one touchdown.

Brandon Metz had a 28 yard reception for score and carried the ball across the line for a second score. George Monaghan added two carries for touchdowns.

On the defense Nathan Stainsby and Cody Jones both had interceptions for the Lions and Riley Anderson had a fumble recovery.

The Lions finish their regular season against the London Falcons 11:00 Saturday morning in London.
