OMFL: Storm Varsity team plays outstanding football in the heat; JVs melt

Varsity

With a very short bench, and blazing heat The Niagara Storm Varsity Football Club defeated the visiting Crimson Tide in a game where the Storm took control at the opening kickoff and never looked back.

After Crimson Tide’s opening drive capping off with a TD the Defence buckled down and only allowed one TD on a broken coverage play late in the third quarter. The Offense replied with a TD of their own on the opening drive and controlled the clock and field position the rest of the game. The Storm came out on top 28 to 16.

Scoring for the Storm were Greg Lamb (1 rush TD, 4 converts), Mitch Gardiner (1 rush TD, 1 forced fumble and recovery, and 3 tackles for loss). Akeeno Williams and Clayton Upson each had a ‘pick six’ interception return. The entire offense live played well.

Varsity head coach Don Moses had this to say about the game. “The guys came to play this week. Even though we only fielded a team with 22 players every guy gave his β€œall” every time they were asked to step onto the field. We had guys playing both ways the entire game and in the heat of the day I was worried about them. The Storm played with more heart and desire than I have seen them play with this season. I look forward to this coming weekend when the Dolphins come to town.”

Junior Varsity

Graham Dowd continues to be a force on offence and special teams for the Storm with his determined play. Two late first half touchdowns for Cambridge really put the Storm behind the eight ball and they really never recovered. Cambridge won the game 34 to 3.

Coach Dave Richardson had this to say about the game. “Mistakes, mistakes and more mistakes! We continue to make the same mistakes that we work on all week to correct. Coverage mistakes and simply lining up incorrectly cost us big time this week. We were down by 7 in the first half and on their goal line and we took an illegal procedure penalty, so we ended up settling for 3 points instead of 7 which was huge at that point in the game. It’s about focus and knowing what your responsibilities are. We can’t continue to act like a young inexperienced team and expect to be successful. We have one more game before the playoff’s start and hopefully we can eliminate the mistakes that have plagued us all season.”
