Condolences: Desmond Bassi (W.J. Mouat / Team BC) passes away too young

Unfortunate news from Abbotsford, British Columbia. Desmond Bassi, W.J. Mouat football star, Team British Columbia player (2010) and Simon Fraser commit was killed in a car accident. CFC featured Bassi this February as one of the top recruits out of British Columbia.

His father Rob Bassi told CBC.ca this about Desmond. “”He was a great young kid … he had a scholarship for playing football at SFU … just a great, great boy,” he said. “It’s a very difficult time for all of us. He had a very bright future for him … he was a very loving young boy.”

A 17-year-old Abbotsford man faces criminal charges after he hit and killed Bassi with his car and fled the scene early Saturday morning.

W.J. Mouat football coach Denis Kelly was quoted in The Province. He called Bassi a quiet, but popular, and incredibly talented athlete.

β€œHe was a tremendous player,” Kelly said. β€œIt’s a shame . . . there was so much potential there.”

Through Facebook, several of Bassi’s classmates have organized a candlelight vigil at W.J. Mouat Secondary from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday evening.
