The Ontario Football Conference (OFC) varsity division had their championship game Saturday evening in Hamilton. The Huronia Stallions representing the North division and the Twin Cities Predators representing the South. This match up proved that the best two teams in the OFC varsity division played last week…in Burlington.
The game had an unfortunate start for the Stallions, turning over an early kick. The turnover resulted in the first of many touchdowns for the Preds’. As the pre-game billing said ‘Fracas to Beney’ hooked up for the first touchdown of the game.
The Stallions offense could not produce much early on which the predators took advantage of all day. The first quarter remained close, with the Preds’ only managing a one-point rouge after the touchdown, making it 8 to 0 after one.
A drive that started in the 1st quarter and went into the 2nd quarter may have been the ‘back-breaker’ for the Stallions. An early unnecessary roughness call, a too-many men call after stopping the Preds’ on third down may have been all that the soon-to-be tired defense could take. The Predators scored on the drive when James Fracas found Spencer Fleming (Team Ontario West) for the 15 to 0 score early in the 2nd quarter.
If you are a Huronia fan you should stop reading now. The rest of the 2nd quarter got really ugly if you were cheering for the Simcoe county team.
After the score by Fleming the Preds’ kicker Ronnie ‘hollywood’ Pfeffer attempted an onside kick and his cover men were successful in recovering it. On the very next play Fracas found Karsten Beney again, this time for a 55 yard touchdown, making it 22 to 0 with 13:51 remaining in the quarter. Before the half ended the Predators scored four more touchdowns. Dan Silvestri had a big 45 yard touchdown run; James Fracas scrambled for a TD with just over 3 minutes remaining; Cody Tapsell caught a Fracas touchdown; and after a big kick off return the preds’ scored with 54 seconds remaining in the half making it 50 to 7.
The second half saw the Predators score 13 more points and lay claim to the OFC Varsity title and the best 3 down football team in the summer in Ontario.
Predator linebackers Jerrelle Vaughan and Andrew McWhinney are worth mentioning for their terrific play. Vaughan with his pass rushes and McWhinney in pass coverage and run support. Kicker Ronnie Pfeffer and QB James Fracas and REC Karsten Beney will be playing for Wilfrid Laurier in the fall. Cody Tapsell will be attending Waterloo.
