The Holland Hurricanes Football Club will conduct a training camp practice session and scrimmage in the Souris area on Sunday, September 4, beginning at 1 p.m.
Souris has a strong tradition of football, including the Souris Wildcats in the PEI Tackle Football League, so the Hurricanes wanted to give football fans in the area an added opportunity to see the college team in action, Michael O’Grady, president of the Hurricanes, said.
“Holland College is the Island’s college, and the Holland Hurricanes Football Club is the Island’s team in the Atlantic Football League. We have players on our club from across the province, but a particularly strong representation from Eastern Kings, so it’s only fitting that we take our camp to Souris,” he said.
The team’s defensive MVP, Souris native and Wildcat alumnus Marcus Dunphy, said he’s looking forward to playing back home.
“Islanders have been showing us great support, and we’re looking forward to seeing the football program on PEI continue to grow. I know that the other Souris Wildcats alumni are as excited as I am to host a football camp in our hometown to showcase the talent of our team,” he said. “This is a chance to show future players that the Holland Hurricanes give Islanders the option of staying on P.E.I. and playing competitive football. We have always had very talented athletes that had to move away to continue playing, so this program is a great way to continue developing as a player while staying close to home.”
As part of the practice session, the Hurricanes will take stage a Red/White scrimmage at the Wildcats’ home field in Rollo Bay. The scrimmage will be followed by a mixer and barbecue hosted by the community.
“We’re hoping that football fans in the Eastern Kings region will come out and take a look at our team in action,” O’Grady said. “Last season was our first in the league, and the team did very well. I think fans will be even more impressed by what they see this year.”
The Atlantic Football League will begin the third season of play in September 2011. There are currently five teams operating in the league: the Moncton Jr. Mustangs, UNB Fredericton Red Bombers, UNB Saint John Seawolves, Dalhousie University Tigers and the Holland College Hurricanes.
