CJFL: Marsch sets PFC single game TD record, Twin Cities wins first game in franchise history

The Winnipeg Rifles won their second straight game as they marched into Edmonton and blasted the winless Wildcats 54-13 in the only Prairie Football Conference game.

Winnipeg jumped out to a quick 21-0 first quarter lead as Ryan Marsch threw a pair of touchdown strikes to conference-leading receiver Matt Lariviere and a 41-yarder to slotback Derek Dean. The Rifles racked up the 3 majors in an 8-and-a-half minute stretch.

The Rifles would tack on 3 more scores in the middle frame as Marsch would connect with receivers Alex Vitt and Kurt Goodrich, along with fullback Bryan Giesbrecht. Winnipeg led 41-1 after the first 30 minutes. Winnipeg put up an astounding 24 first downs and 453 yards of net offense in the half.

Marsch would find receiver Brett Carter for a 31-yard pass and run touchdown for the lone score of the third quarter. The Carter catch was the 7th touchdown pass of the day for the Winnipeg pivot, establishing a new single-game conference record.

The Wildcats offense would finally get untracked in the fourth quarter as fullback Justin McEvoy would dive in from a yard out to make it 47-13. Rifles backup tailback Choe Sesay scored on the last play from scrimmage to close out the scoring.

Ryan Marsch went 24-32 for 392 yards with 7 majors, while Jordan Olson came on in relief for the Cats to complete 15 of 22 for 154 yards. Alex Vitt led the Winnipeg receivers with 6 grabs for 104 yards. Ryan Smith had 13 grabs for 137 yards for the Cats. Rifles linebacker Donovan Gregoire had 9 tackles, while teammate Tavian Thomas had 3 sacks.

The Ontario Football Conference probably played two of its games through the worst weather in recent history. In fact in Windsor the game was suspended due to lightning after finally getting started for the third time. It will be rescheduled at a later date with 9:07 remaining in the first quarter with the AKO Fratmen leading the London Beefeaters 7-0.

Rain and wind throughout pummeled the teams in Brampton as the Bears were defeated by the Twin Cities Predators 30-0.

In St Leonard the Cougars defeated the visiting Ottawa Sooners 34-16. Friday night in Hamilton in the second half of a home and home series the Hamilton Hurricanes remain undefeated at 2-0 with a 42-7 victory over the Burlington Braves.

The 6 teams of the British Columbia Football Conference enjoyed a bye week.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
