Chambers leads Laurier to blow out victory over #10 Gee Gees in front of sellout crowd (video)

WATERLOO, Ont. (October 1, 2011) – Receiver Shamawd Chambers of Markham, Ont., caught eight passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (2-3) defeated the No. 10 Ottawa Gee-Gees (3-2) 51-16 on Lauriers 100th Homecoming weekend.

Playing in front of a boisterous crowd of 9,262 at University Stadium, the Hawks jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead and never looked back en route to snapping their three game losing streak.

Receiver Dillon Heap of Waterloo, Ont., had a record-setting performance as he became the OUAs all-time punt return yards leader as he returned seven punts for 74 yards to surpass Windsors Don Hollerhead. He broke the record of 1,886 yards in the first qua rter on a 27 yard return.

Hawks quarterback Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J., shook off a tough game against Western to finish the contest with four touchdown passes and 348 yards while completing 20 of 34 passes. Lauriers pivot now has 16 touchdown passes on the season and now sits fifth all-time in team history for single season touchdowns.

Using the crowd to their advantage, the Hawks got touchdowns from Mark Surya of Burlington, Ont., and Isaac Dell of Niagara Falls, Ont., to take the lead after one quarter.

After a Matt Falvo (Welland, Ont.) field goal cut the deficit to 10, the Hawks drove 75 yards on six plays, capped off by a Kelly one yard touchdown run, late in the half to take a 20-3 lead into the second half.

Laurier would blow the game wide open in the third quarter as they found the endzone three times. Kelly connected with Chambers for 32 and 58 yard majors and Rashad La Touche of Whitby, Ont., scored on an 18 yard pass to stretch the Hawks lead 32.

A Brendan Gillanders (Orleans, Ont.) touchdown early in the fourth quarter cut into the Hawks lead but backup quarterback Steven Fantham of London, Ont., completed his first career touchdown pass to Kelvin Muamba of Mississauga, Ont., to restore the 32 point advantage. For Muamba, it was his first career touchdown reception as well.

Nathan Hawkes of Kitchener, Ont., rounded out the scoring with a 25 yard field goal late in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, the Hawks had another strong game, intercepting Ottawa quarterback Aaron Colbon of Orleans, Ont., twice while limiting Gillanders to just 68 rushing yards. Mitchell Bosch of Langley, B.C., and Drew Galpin of Kitchener, Ont., led the Hawks with 6.5 tackles each.

With the victory, the Golden Hawks moved into a tie with the Toronto Varsity Blues for sixth place in the OUA.

Laurier will have a short week ahead of them as they prepare to take on the Waterl oo Warriors on Thursday night at Warrior Field. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

NOTES: Kelly continues to lead the CIS in touchdown passes and is just seven shy of Lauriers all-time record of 23, held by Bill Kubas, with three games remaining…Chambers 201 receiving yards was the third-highest single game total in team history, trailing only Stefan Ptaszek (217) and Andre Talbot (289)…Heap has 1,946 career punt return yards and is on track to become just the third player in CIS history to break the 2,000 yard mark…Bosch, who has 150.0 career tackles, trails former Golden Hawk and current coaching staff member Rohan Thompson by just 3.5 tackles for second all-time at Laurier

The uOttawa Gee-Gees suffered through a 51-16 loss and watched Laurier play their best game of the season. First-year starting pivot Aaron Colbon (Orleans, Ont.) and the Gee-Gees could not get any momentum against a tight and aggressive offense, while the Golden Hawks took advantage of an uncharacteristically soft Gee-Gees defense who had a 41-0 shutout against Toronto last week.

Colbon finished with 332 yards, 24-42, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Third year receiver Simon Le Marquand (Gatineau, Que.) was about the only spark for the Gee-Gees and finished with 137 yards on 10 catches. Defensively the Gee-Gees could simply not contain Laurier’s quarterback Shane Kelly who had four touchdown passes, on interception, 348 passing yards, and who was 20-34.

The Gee-Gees had a good start when third-year defensive back Soonbum Cha (Burlington, Ont.) returned an interception for a touchdown in the first quarter only to see it called back after a holding penalty. Things seemed to quickly unravel from there as the Golden Hawks offense took control of this game early and never looked back.

The Gee-Gees continued to give up big plays on penalties that proved to be costly, including a fumble in the third quarter that was called back after an offside. Laurier capitalized with a touchdown, and basically put the game out of reach at that point with a 27-3 lead.

Gee-Gees head coach Jean-Philippe Asselin was proud to see his team give a solid effort right until the end, but spoke of a lack of execution and some costly mistakes. β€œI think the effort was there, they played hard, they kept their focus till the end and never stopped playing,” explained Asselin. β€œBut, unfortunately we made some bad mistakes and paid a high price for them.”

β€œ[Laurier] made some big plays and they didn’t make mistakes,” Asselin continued. β€œI think every week they’re learning, there is some positive to this game. This is a young team with lots of potential, we just need to correct those mistakes and we’ll be able to beat any team I think.”

Gee-Gees will have a chance to regroup next weekend when they host the York University Lions on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa, Ont.
