Laurier demolished cross town rivals in Thursday night action (video)

WATERLOO, Ont. (October 6, 2011) – Rashad La Touche of Whitby, Ont., and Tyrrel Wilson of Hamilton, each rushed for over 100 yards as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-3) cruised past the Waterloo Warriors (0-6) by a score of 69-3 on Thursday evening at Warriors Field.

With the win, the Hawks moved into a tie in the OUA standings with the Queen’s Gaels and the Ottawa Gee-Gees. All three teams now have three wins but the Gaels and Gee-Gees each have a game in hand as they will play their Week Six matchups on Saturday.

La Touche finished the game with 131 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns while Wilson had 101 yards and a touchdown on 10 carriers. Ashton Rochester of Oakville, Ont., playing in his first career CIS football game, chipped in with 78 yards and a touchdown on five carriers to help the Hawk s to their highest rushing total of the season, 306 yards.

While the Hawks rushing game put in their best performance of the year, the pass game was not hurt as starting quarterback Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, Ont., continued his run towards the top of the Laurier record books. The fifth year pivot connected on 15 of 23 passes for 303 yards and four touchdowns in three quarters of action. Those numbers were good enough to move him into third place on two single-season records lists at Laurier, passing yards (1,902) and touchdowns (20).

Receiver Shamawd Chambers of Markham, Ont., continued to be the main target for Kelly as he hauled in four catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns.

In total, 10 different Hawks had receptions in the game, including Karsten Beney of Waterloo, Ont., and Alex Anthony of Victoria, B.C., who each had their first receiving touchdown of the season. Fo r Beney, his touchdown was the first of his CIS career while Anthony, seeing his first action in 2011 after suffering an offseason injury, had his first touchdown of the season.

Dillon Heap of Waterloo, Ont., also established another career mark as he became just the third player in CIS history to break the 2,000 yard mark for career punt returns. Heap, who finished the game with three returns for 74 yards, now has 2,010 yards for his career.

For the Warriors, quarterback Luke Balch of London, Ont., was their top performer on the night as he threw for 182 yards and rushed for an additional 111. However, Waterloo’s pivot was also sacked five times during the contest as the Hawks defence continued to excel in that aspect of the game. Mitchell Bosch of Langley, B.C., led the defence with 9.5 total tackles and now ranks second all-time at Laurier with 159.5 tackles.

The Golden Hawks w ill look to improve their winning streak to three games next weekend when they host the McMaster Marauders at University Stadium. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted live on theScore.

NOTES: Three different Hawks recorded their first career touchdowns in the game including Wilson, Rochester and Beney…Kicker Ronnie Pfeffer of Kitchener, Ont., connected on a 41 yard field goal in the second quarter, the longest of the season for the rookie…Pfeffer also tied the Laurier record for most kickoffs in a game with 11…the record is also held by former Hawk Chris Mamo who accomplished the feat twice…Kelly trails Bill Kubas’ all-time single season record for passing yards by 392 yards and for touchdowns by three…La Touche and Wilson became the second and third Hawks to crack the 100 yard rushing mark this season after Anton Bennett of Toronto, accomplished the feat against Windsor in Week Two
