NS: Week Five Roundup of NSSAFFL (Bowl Week)

Bowl fever was in full force this past week in the Nova Scotia Student Athletic Federation Football League (NSSAFFL). Teams were involved in Bowl games which pitted them against crosstown and league rivals. Furthermore, teams were jockeying for position in the standings in order to make the playoffs or to gain home field advantage.
The Citadel Phoenix continued their dominance of opponents in the Turkey Bowl. This time, the Cobequid Cougars were the latest victims of the Phoenix’s game execution. However, the Phoenix was not the only team to dominate their opponents on the field.
At the Bremner Bowl, the Charles P Allen Cheetahs remained undefeated by shutting out the Sackville High Kingfishers in Burnside. The Dartmouth Spartans kept pace with the Phoenix and Cheetahs by taking care of Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals while the Avon View Avalanche dispatched the Northeast Kings Titans. The Horton Griffins made easy work of the Central Kings Gators in Wolfville.

Meanwhile, the Sir John A MacDonald Flames got back on track, by pulling out a win against the Halifax West Warriors in their Turkey Bowl matchup. Finally, the Lockview Dragons got theirsecond win of the season, at the expense of the JL Ilsley Judges.

Here are results from week five NSSAFFL action:

Citadel High Phoenix 42, Cobequid Education Centre Cougars 10:

In the must see matchup in the NSSAFFL, the Phoenix came into this game with their undefeated streak on the line. The Cougars saw first-hand why the Phoenix is tough to beat. The Phoenix dominated game play in the Turkey Bowl, which was played at Saint Mary’s Huskies Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Again, the magical duo led the Phoenix. Quarterback Derek Brown passed for three touchdowns and rushed into the end zone for two more. Meanwhile, wide receiver A’dre Fraser had four catches and two touchdowns. Running back Ryan Kublek rushed for 13 carries on 150 yards.

The defense of the Phoenix also contributed to the team’s point tallies. Defensive end Max Fitzgerald had a fake field goal touchdown reception. Also, Fitzgerald had a punt block and a sack for the Phoenix. Drew MacDonald had an interception which ended up being a 50 yard run for a touchdown and had five tackles on the day. Chris Folkins had seven tackles and a punt block.

This victory gave the Phoenix their fourth straight Turkey Bowl title over the Cougars. With this win, the Cougars move to a 5-0 record while the Cougars drop to 2-3 in the league.

Charles P Allen Cheetahs 51, Sackville High Kingfishers 0:

In the 14th annual Bremner Bowl played in Burnside on Thursday evening, the Cheetahs came ready to play and stymied the Kingfishers . Running back/defensive back Matt Ryan led the way by rushing for two touchdowns. Also offensively for the Cheetahs, running back Lucas Forsey rushed for one touchdown and quarterback Andrew Adams connected with receiver Mack Thompson for a touchdown. Cheetahs’ receiver Jordan Koch had a 60 yard punt return for a touchdown. On defense, linebacker Mike Donovan led the way with seven tackles for the victors.

With this win, theCheetahs improve to 3-0-1 while the Kingfishers drop to 3-2 with the loss.

Horton Griffins 64, Central Kings Gators 1:

At Raymond Field in Wolfville on Friday evening, the Griffins walked over the Gators with solid offense and defence. Running back Robert Adams led the way, rushing for 148 yards on eight carries for 3 touchdowns.

Griffins wide receiver/running back Cam Davidson rushed for 112 yards on 10 carries for three touchdowns. Linebacker Will Stewart ran into the end zone for a touchdown, while defensive end Curtis Bawn led the Griffins defense. Bawn had two defensive touchdowns: one on an interception and one which was a fumble recovery. These two touchdowns gives Bawn four touchdowns on defense.

As for the Gators, their single point in the game came off a kick off.

This win keeps the Griffins undefeated with a 4-0-1 record, while the Gators are still winless with a 0-4 record.

Dartmouth High Spartans 42, Dr. J.H.Gillis Royals 7:

On Saturday evening at Burnside Turf, the Spartans dominated the Royals throughout the whole game. The Spartans were led by quarterback Cody Cluett who passed for 218 yards and four touchdowns in the first half of the game. In the second half, Cluett also caught a 34 yard catch.

Spartans running back Julian Rogers rushed for 119 yards and one touchdown. Slotback Ashton Slawter ran for 175 yards and reached the end zone twice while defensive end/wide receiver Shivase Reddick contributed with two touchdowns for the Spartans.

This win moves the Spartans to a 3-1 record while the Royals are now 3-2 with the loss.

Avon View Avalanche 41, NortheastKings Education Centre Titans 14:

On Sunday afternoon, the Avalanche manhandled the Titans to win their Turkey Bowl matchup. Their solid offense attack was the key to victory. Avalanche quarterback Trevor House was 4 for 10 with 98 passing yards and had one touchdown to lead the way.

Five players ran into the end zone to contribute to the Avalanche’s tally on the score sheet. Running back J.P Primeau led the way with two touchdowns. He also rushed for 122 yards and 90 returning yards. Avalanche slotback Russ Lavergne, Nathan Wentzel and Christian May also ran in for a touchdown each.

On defense, middle linebacker Justin Dickenson had the final touchdown of the bowl game. Dickenson blocked and recovered a punt for the touchdown and combined with middle linebacker A.J. Whitehead for 17 tackles and two sacks.

As for the Titans,quarterback Dylan Degraff ran into the end zone for a touchdown. Andrew Chase rushed in for the other touchdown.

With the Turkey Bowl win, the Avalanche improve their record to 3-1. This is a significant improvement from last season, in which the Avalanche was 0-8 in league play. On the other hand, the Titans drop to 1-3.

Sir John A MacDonald Flames 21, Halifax West Warriors 12:

The Flames got back on track and back into the win column in front of a home crowd on Monday afternoon as the Flames scored a touchdown in the second, third and fourth quarter to get by the Warriors.

Quarterback Matt Shannon led the way as he was 11 for 14 on the field and threw for 221 passing yards. Shannon also had one carry for eight yards, threw three touchdowns and one interception for the Flames. Running back Justin Stevens had 14 carries for 114 yards (one of which was a 20 yard carry) while Hayden Clarke had 14 carries for 55 yards. Total rushing yards for the Flames was 181 yards.

Flames receivers Mike Soley (4 catches for 79 yards), Ryan Murchison (5 catches for 67 yards) and Brandon Gorman (2 catches for 36 yards) had a touchdown a piece for the team.

On defense, the Flames had two fumble recoveries and 34 tackles. Nate Rostek and John Perrott led the Flames with five tackles a piece while linebacker Keith Langille had four tackles.

With the win, theFlames improve their record to 1-4 while the Warriors dropped to 1-3.

Lockview High Dragons 37, JL IlsleyHigh Judges 14:

The weather (high winds) played havoc with the Judges game execution on Monday afternoon at Rockingstone Field. In the first quarter, the Dragons jumped out to a 17-0 lead because of several errors made by the Judges.

With this win, the Dragons are now 2-3 while the Judges are 2-2 in league standings.
