OFC: Hurricanes Lose a Tough One to Windsor

Hurricanes Finish Regular Season with 7-1 Record

Hamilton, Ontario — The Hamilton Hurricanes traveled to Windsor this past Saturday to take on the Windsor AKO Fratmen in a battle of the unbeatens. The wind before kick off was blowing extremely hard which made for an interesting match up and put the defensive ground game to work early for both teams.

AKO opened the scoring with a 33 yard field goal in the first quarter. Five minutes into the second quarter, Hamilton’s Troy Croonen scampered 25 yards for a touchdown to put the Canes up 7-3. Not to be outdone, Stephen Jordan of the Hurricanes was back to return an AKO punt and once he caught it he got free from the pack and ran it back for a 61 yard touchdown.

The Hurricanes took a 14-3 lead into the locker room at half time.

Windsor came out in the second half looking like a completely different team. After a couple miscues by the Hurricanes and some costly turnovers, the Fratmen were able to capitalize by scoring three touchdowns in a seven minute span that put Windsor in the lead 24-14 by the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter saw Windsor kick a 22 yard field goal to extend their lead to 27-14. Hamilton answered late in the final stanza with an 11 yard touchdown pass from Matt Francis to Dan Iafrate to make it a 27-21 game with 2:03 left to play.

The Hurricanes defense took to the field looking to create a turnover and end the game with the ball. That is what almost happened when AKO’s Beau Lumley was stacked up in the backfield and had the ball stripped. The Fratmen were able to recover, preventing the Hurricanes a chance to gain possession of the ball and march down field to win the game.

The Windsor AKO Fratmen improved to a perfect 8-0, while Hamilton experienced their first loss of the season setting their regular season record at 7-1.

#1 Windsor AKO Fratmen will host #4 Burlington Braves on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the University of Windsor Stadium. Game time 7:00 pm. #2 Hamilton Hurricanes will host #3 St. Leonard Cougars Sunday, October 23, 2011 at Ivor Wynne Stadium at 7pm.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
