Gary plans to continue on building success with Varsity Blues

Greg Gary is continuing the work he has already started with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues football program.

Yesterday, the University of Toronto Facility of Education and Health announced that Gary will continue on in his roles as head football coach and manager of football operations for the Varsity Blues. Director of Intercollegiate and High Performance Sport, Beth Ali says that Gary is the right fit for the team.

“Greg has made a significant impact on our athletes and our football program,” comments Ali. “He brings excellent coaching and leadership skills which enhances the progression of our program both on the field and in the classroom.”

Born in Claremont, California, Gary began his head coaching career at Claremont High School. He was head coach of the Junior Varsity team at his alma mater. Gary has over 20 years of coaching experience.

Additionally, Gary played linebacker at California State Fullerton where he was a scholarship recipient. He captained the football team and won an Iron Man award in 1981. In 1982, Gary played one season in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams. He also won a Grey Cup with the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger Cats in 1986 and played four years with the team.

In 2008, Gary came on board for a brief stint with the Varsity Blues to serve as a linebackers coach. When Greg DeLaval left the head coaching position last season, Gary was given over the reins.

In the OUA, the Varsity Blues ended up in seventh place with a 3-5 record under Gary. The team ended up two points back of a playoff spot.

One of the goals for the Varsity Blues will be to get back into the playoffs. The last time they reached the postseason was 1995.

Gary is glad that he will be remaining with the Varsity Blues and says the work has already begun for next season.

“I’m looking forward to continuing on as the Head Football Coach at the University of Toronto,” says Gary. “Our players are already working hard to continue to build on what we started last season.”

An announcement is expected tomorrow on the defensive coordinator position. The search is ongoing for the Offensive Coordinator and an announcement on that position is expected sometime later in the week.

“Our coaching staff will continue to focus on the University of Toronto’s tradition of developing well rounded student-athletes,” adds Gary.
