Starting his football career at the age of 10, Kyle Van Wynsberghe has always possessed a special talent. His first action on the grid iron was with the Brantford Bisons. He played 3 years at quarter back, sneaking in one game at safety. Van Wynsberghe’s best memory with the Bison’s involves maybe his best game to date. “One of my favorite football memories came in my 3rd year playing for Brantford when we faced Cambridge in our last regular season game. I threw for 359 yards and 4 TDs. Also in that game while playing safety, I recovered a fumble and ran it back 66 yards for a TD. We won that game 44-14.” Numbers that would make any pro smile, Van Wynsberghe’s effort in that game solidified him as a future asset.
Constantly displaying his talents on the field, Van Wynsberghe stepped into high school with a mission. In his first year, he was already named 2nd string QB for his schools senior team, and 1st string for the juniors. ” I’ve only lost 3 out of 27 games in my high school career so far. Since I’ve been in grade nine, our senior team has been to the championship game 3 times, 2 of which we won.”
Having had just that success, would be enough for many players Van Wynsberghe’s age, but the young QB followed up those seasons with spectacular football. “My sophmore year I started on the senior team. We went 8-1, but lost in the championship to our rival Waterford. The next year my junior year we went 9-0 beating, our rival Waterford in the championship game,” say Van Wynsberghe. Success such as this does not come without reward and awards are something Van Wynsberghe has quickly gotten accustom to.
His very impressive Award and Accomplishments list would like something like this:
-Damon Allen High School QB challenge champion.
-Team MVP-Brantford Bisons 2007
-Team MVP- Brantford bisons 2008
-Team MVP- brantford bisons – 2009
-Team MVP- Delhi Raiders 2010 (first grade 10 to win MVP on a senior team at Delhi)
-Team MVP- Delhi Raiders 2011
-OVFL player of the week
-OVFL all-star game selection
-GHR/GTA all star game selection
-Offensive MVP 2011 – Hamilton Ironmen JV
-Led Adams conference in passing yards 2011 JV (1607yrds 2nd in ovfl)
-Starting QB in grade 10 on senior high school team
A resume like this, can only grow, and with having one more year at high school, there is no doubt that more awards and accomplishments will come.
If you ask Van Wynsberghe what has helped him get to where he is today, he would tell you how much a lot has to do with the men who have been in charge of the teams he’s played for. “I’ve been fortunate enough to never play for a bad coach, or a coach I didn’t get along with,” the QB says. “All the coaches I’ve played for have been awesome guys that are easy to get along with and easy to agree with there on field decisions.” It is often said that behind every good quarter back is a good coach. As true as that may be for Van Wynesberghe, it is also safe to say that in front of all his coaches, is a great quarter back.
With having so much success, it may be hard to imagine what has been Van Wynsberghe’s biggest football moment. And with so many amazing wins, it may come as a surprise to hear his answer. “My biggest football accomplishment would have to be winning my scholarship. I totally went into that competition having no clue what to expect. I throw the ball everyday in my back yard into a homemade target, no matter what the weather conditions. I knew that day I just had to go throw just like I do when I am in the back yard.”
As for the future of this young star, it may be to no surprise as to which school’s are on his mind when he graduates next year. ” I like McMaster, Windsor, Guelph. I want to keep playing football as long as I possibly can. Football has opened some doors for me, as well as introduced me to some awesome coaches, players, and friends. I want to more than anything, play university ball.”
While currently playing for the Hamilton Ironman, it would only be fitting for Van Wynsberghe to continue his career after high school, playing for the Vanier Cup Champions. “I really like McMaster because Hamilton is a football city. Hamilton in my opinion is the best city in Ontario to play football. I love playing for the Ironmen in the OVFL. The winning reputation that the program has, makes any kid want to play here. Not to mention getting to play for the best coaching staff in the OV, as well as playing in McMaster’s backyard.”
Having a starters talent hasn’t stopped Van Wynsberghe from being humble about his position. Even with the success he has, the QB is more then ready to be a back up, and is excited to learn. “Playing for Hamilton this year will be a great learning experience. This being my first year of senior varsity, I expect to back-up Alex Hill. He’s a great guy, and an awesome QB and fun to watch his style of play. He’s an amazing leader. Taking tips from him this year will only help me improve.”
Many can speculate where Kyle Van Wynsberghe will take his talents in the fall of 2013. But one things for sure, which ever university is lucky enough to have him, can expect some victories.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
