Webster and Weissbach top Bears’ recruiting class


The University of Alberta Golden Bears’ football team proudly introduced some of the top Alberta high school players as their recruits for the 2012 season today at a spring camp media conference at Foote Field.

Topping the list are Harry Ainlay running back Aundrey Webster, and Bev Facey defensive lineman Troy Weissbach. Webster, who stands 5’11 and 180lbs, was the feature back with the Titans, and helped guide them to the 2012 provincial championship, as well as three consecutive city championships. He was also named the Edmonton public league MVP in 2012 after collecting a combined 646 rushing and receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Weissbach is a 6’2”, 265lbs DL and team captain from the Edmonton Metro League Carr Conference champion Falcons. He recorded 16 solo tackles, one sack, and 22.5 total tackles this past season. He was also a captain on the Team Alberta squad at the 2011 Canada Cup, where he was named defensive MVP, and he played for the World U20 team that defeated Team USA 38-35 this past February.

Brandon Jennings (DB), Jacob Brett (OL), Ben Lysak (DL), Cole Bishop (DB), Kael Schryver (DB), Chris Correveau (DL), Levon Hawerliak (DB), Ryan Brower (REC) and Craig Korte (LB) were the other recruits introduced on Thursday.

Webster, Weissbach, Jennings, Lysak and Brett were all recently named to the Football Alberta β€˜North’ roster for the upcoming annual North-South Senior Bowl, while Weissbach, Jennings, Brett and Lysak all played for Alberta at the 2011 Canada Cup.

Jennings (6’1”, 175lbs) comes to the Golden Bears’ after graduating from Paul Kane High School in St. Albert, where he played DB for the Blues.

Brett is a 6’2” 285lbs offensive lineman who hails from Fort. Saskatchewan.

Lysak (6’1”, 230lbs) is a former member of the Salisbury High School Sabres, where he played DL.

Bishop, like Weissbach, is also a former Falcon, and the 6’2” 200lbs DB also played for the Edmonton Wildcats and the Vancouver Island Raiders.

The 6’4” and 200lbs Schryver, also a DB, previously played for the Wildcats and the Salisbury Sabres.

Also on the defensive line is 6’3” 285lbs Chris Correveau who comes to the Bears from Fort Saskatchewan.

Hawerliak (5’10”, 175lbs) is a graduate of Ross Sheppard High School where he played defensive back for the Thunderbirds.

Brower is a 6’0, 170lbs receiver who played his first two seasons at Salisbury, but won a BC provincial high school championship with Mount Douglas in his senior year.

Joining the line backing core is the 5’11” and 200lbs Korte who hails from Spruce Grove. Craig’s father Brent, played defensive end for the Golden Bears in the 1980s, and played in the 1989 East-West Shrine Game, one of just four Golden Bears to have done so
