Edmonton and area playoff week for midget season

This is the end of Midget football for this year, the talent was incredible, and all the teams had their star moments, it was a great season and we are looking forward to seeing the talent next year brings.

The Lloydminster Red Dogs had a dominating performance to claim the team’s first Capital District Minor Football Association tier II title on Sunday when they played one of the toughest teams in the league the battle river shock and won 38-14. “We were in shock. We couldn’t believe it just how everything went right. I’ve been telling these guys all year long that they seemed to be like a team of destiny,” said head coach Rod Kirby. “We have a lot of young guys on this team and they earned it. I’ve never seen a team work so hard all year long to achieve a goal, and I think basically the reaction was one of relief and pure joy. It was quite an experience.”

What was most surprising about the game wasn’t the fact the Red Dogs won, but how dominant they were over the Shock – considering they had lost to them, 18–9, in the first week of the season. With a league title now secure under their belts, Kirby was just so proud of seeing what his players were able to accomplish this year.

“I’ve coached a lot of teams over the years and these guys, they’re a special group. I’m really proud and happy for them,” said Kirby. “They worked hard all year and they definitely deserved what they achieved. The coaching staff was also awesome, the best staff I’ve ever had. It definitely wasn’t possible without the coaches I had working with me, so I’m happy for everybody. It was a great season.”

The St. Albert Storm ended their football season on a winning note May 9th with a 34-14 win over Millwoods Grizzlies in the Tier II playoff final at the Riel Park turf field. It was the second victory in six games for the Storm who also beat the Grizzlies 35-7 in the team’s second game in the Tier I and II division schedule.

The injury bug has bitten the Leduc Cats in the last few weeks as they have lost six starters on defense, leaving the team at its breaking point for guys. Head coach Claude Cartier is unsure which players will or won’t play, but is confident in the way others have stepped up, especially in a close 30-26 loss to the Lloydminster Red Dogs in the final regular season game on May 6. The ‘Cats played the Chargers in the first game of the regular season and squeaked out a 14-12 in a snowstorm in Edmonton.

The ‘Cats biggest weapon this season hasn’t been the strong play of their defense and offense, but the amount of heart each of the players put into each game and play.
