Mandella is the first member of his family to play football and it was a great move as he’s become an elite defensive star in Alberta football ranks.
The defensive back began his successful gridiron career suiting up for the Edmonton Chargers football club. During his time there, he was special teams player of the year (2009) and team defensive player of the year (2011).
Moreover, Mandella played high school football for the Austin O’Brien Crusaders. This past season (2011), he was the team’s most improved player. Recently, the Crusaders standout was selected to the North Team that participated in the Senior Bowl high school all-star game. For his stellar play on the field, Mandella was named outstanding defensive back of the game.
As for the highlight of his gridiron career, it took place in his senior year with the Crusaders.
“The most memorable football experience was winning provincials my last year of high school with Austin O’Brien,” comments the Crusaders defensive back. “It was memorable just because it was the first one that was ever won by the school, so it was a very special moment.”
After he graduates from high school this month, Mandella will move provinces for the next chapter of his football and academic life. He has committed to the University of Saskatchewan and says it’s the perfect spot to achieve further goals.
“I committed to Saskatchewan because I thought it was the best opportunity to keep chasing my dreams and the strength of the program that the Huskies have,” explains the future Huskies player of his decision to commit to the school.
For all the accomplishments Mandella has achieved thus far, he credits his greatest influences on and off the field for the significant roles they’ve played ininspiring him to become the player he is today.
“The most influential people in my life are my parents as they push me every day to always get the best out of me,” adds the Crusaders defensive star. “Seeing them work hard everyday just drives me to be the best that I can be.”
“Also, Susan Morgan from the Edmonton Chargers because of the opportunities she provides, the care she has for every player that comes through that
organization is amazing and the love she has towards everyone makes her very special.”
Consequently from playing the game of football, Mandella has learned what the key is for success in all life endeavours.
“You have to work hard to get what you want,” says Mandella. “Things aren’t just given to you.”
“Nothing is handed and you got to be able to put in the work.”
