On Saturday the Cambridge Junior Varsity Lions were in Brampton to take on the Bulldogs. It was a hard fought game but the Lions came away with a 20 – 6 victory, to start the season 2 and 0. The win came as a result of a great defensive sequence on the opening drive along with great offensive and special teams efforts.
The Lions defence caused four turnovers in the first half, most notable on the opening drive by the Bulldogs, they had an early strip, as well as a fumble recovery by Nick Cumby. His great play was followed up by an interception by Josh Sherridan in the end zone. The Lions also got interceptions from Logan Tellier who returned it for 55 yards, and Mitchell Weiler who returned his interception for 34 yards. The great defensive play of the Lions was able to keep them in the game early on. The defence was also very successful in the second half of the game, registering eight sacks (ten including the first half), Michael Gomez was a ferocious force in this game recording 4 of the teams ten sacks.
The offence took over in the second quarter, opening the scoring with a 51 yard touchdown pass from Matt Skalos to Alexander Salytchey and on their next drive they scored on a 21 yard pass to Travis Simpson. On the opening kick off for the second half, Alexander Salytchey ran the kick back for an 85 yard touchdown to put the Lions up 20-0.
The Bulldogs took advantage of a rare lapse from the Lions, with an interception early in the fourth quarter, which then led to a six yard touchdown pass to Stone Sousa. The Lions showed resiliency though and came away with the 20-6 victory.
Cambridge aims to keep up their winning ways as they head into Mississauga this Saturday for a 2 PM game.
