2011 CFC ‘SUMMER ONTARIO RANKINGS’

VARSITY (UNDER 20)

1 Toronto Thunder (1) [4-0] OVFL

Defeated Myers Riders 44 to 36 on the road.

It was the week of the offense in the OVFL and the Thunder followed the trend putting up 44 points against a solid Myers Rider defense. Jayde Rowe averaged over 13 yards on 13 carries with 2 touchdowns. Play the Warriors this weekend who will be a little ornery after their recent loss to the Ravens.

Fitting right in. Ironmen quarterback Kyle Van Wynsberghe evades defenders to run for a first down.
2 Hamilton Ironmen (2) [4-0] OVFL

Defeated Niagara Spears 35 to 14 on the road.

Missing many starters, including starting QB Alex Hill, the Ironmen showed off their depth on Friday night. Rookie QB Kyle Van Wynsberghe (who will also lead Coach Underhill’s Team Ontario West in 3 week Β½ weeks) was called on to take charge of the offense. β€œWe showed them that Kyle Van Wynsberghe is the real deal,” praised coach Underhill. β€œHe stepped up in the pocket, made some good throws and he ran when he needed to. He did a great job.”

3 London Junior Mustangs (3) [4-0] OVFL

Defeated Cambridge Lions 20 to 19 on the road.

QB Colin Drennan continued his strong play for the Mustangs, connecting on 14 of 30 passes for 265 yards, 2 touchdowns with 1 INT. Will have another big test this weekend when they travel to Brampton to play the Bulldogs, a team much better than their record indicates.

4 Twin Cities Predators (5) [4-0] OFC

Defeated Chatham-Kent Cougars 21 to 6 at home.

Went out to an early 21 to 3 lead at half time, holding on for a victory over an improved Cougar team. Great team defense held the opponents to under 100 yards rushing and just under 150 yards passing, accumulating 4 interceptions in the process. Face the Hamilton Panthers this week.

5 Metro Toronto Wildcats (6) [3-1] OVFL

Defeated Etobicoke Eagles 50 to 49 on the road, in triple overtime.

Star running back Travis Jennings, who coming into week four had already amassed almost 300 yards from scrimmage and 3 TD’s, was once again the difference maker against Etobicoke. Jennings came up huge in the passing game, as well as on the ground, finding pay dirt three times. “What a game”, Head Coach Frank Panos exclaimed. “I don’t think you can get better entertainment anywhere in Toronto or Ontario for that matter on a Saturday night for five bucks.”

6 Sault Ste. Marie Sabercats (8) [3-1] OVFL

Defeated Brampton Bulldogs 31 to 26 at home.

A clutch goal-line stand in the final two minutes preserved the Cats 31-26 win over the Brampton Bulldogs at Rocky DiPietro Field. Quarterback Casey Wright put up huge numbers, completing 24 passes in 44 attempts for 372 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Alex Morrison caught a pair of scoring strikes from Wright on tosses of 19 and 17 yards. Dylan Hebert hooked up with Wright for a 39-yard major to open the scoring nine minutes into the game.

7 Essex Ravens (HM) [2-2] OVFL

Defeated Mississauga Warriors 42 to 28 at home.

Using a combination of rookie QB Andrew Vallee and David McDuffie, the Ravens offense gave the Warrior defense fits all game. McDuffie ran for a pair of touchdowns and threw for another. Comparisons have been made to another Raven great, Austin Kennedy. Host the Guelph Bears this weekend.

8 Mississauga Warriors (4) [3-1] OVFL

Lost to Essex Ravens 42 to 28 on the road.

The defense could not contain the QB duo of Andrew Vallee and David McDuffie. The offense did some good things, led by Marcus Hobbs 3 TD passes. It was the first outing that Luckas Gavac was held to under 100 yards rushing. Don’t have time to ponder as they look to rebound against the #1 Toronto Thunder.

9 Cumberland Panthers (7) [3-1] OVFL

Defeated Oshawa Hawkeyes 18 to 1 on the road.

The defense was β€˜stought’ and the offense did enough as they outlasted the Hawkeyes on the road. Big offensive plays will be needed in the future for the Panthers to continue their winning ways.

10 Burlington Stampeders (10) [2-1-1] OFC

Defeated Forest City Thunderbirds 38 to 6.

Honourable Mentions:

Sudbury Gladiators [4-0] OFC, Kingston Grenadiers [3-1] OVFL, Pickering Dolphins [3-1] OVFL, Myers Riders [1-3] OVFL, Chatham Kent Cougars (NR) [2-1-1) OFC

Give him some room! Running back Tafari Delisser (JV Ironmen) finds some open space.
JUNIOR VARSITY (UNDER 17)

1 Mississauga Warriors (1) [4-0] OVFL

Defeated Essex Ravens 48 to 28 on the road.

The Warriors have proved they can compete with anyone in Ontario. The question will be how they will keep improving every week? Nate Hobbs again let the offense with a spectacular game, throwing for 295 yards on 17 of 23 throws, and 2 TDs with 1 INT. Jonathan McEachron continued his β€˜stud’ performance at running back with 151 yards and 3 touchdowns. The key was they were the first team to minimize the great running game of the Ravens – who for the first time all year did not have two rushers over 100 yards…they had zero.

2 Burlington Stampeders β€˜96 (2) [4-0] OFC

Defeated Toronto Jr. Argos 42 to 8 on the road.

Fell behind early, giving up a 99 yard TD pass, but recovered to lead 28 to 8 by halftime. Play the Chatham-Kent Cougars this week.

3 Essex Ravens (3) [3-1] OVFL

Lost to Mississauga Warriors 48 to 28 at home.

Lost to the Mississauga Warriors but will stay ranked #3. The β€˜ground and pound’ was stopped in its tracks by a great Warrior defensive line. Look to get back on track this week when they host the Guelph Bears.

4 Pickering Dolphins (5) [4-0] OVFL

Defeated Markham Raiders 53 to 6 on the road.

Jumped ahead of the Grens’ this week due to the fact that they have been doing slightly better in β€˜like’ opponent match ups. Athletically can match up against anyone, but will they be able to match up on the line of scrimmage against the bigger teams from Western Ontario?

5 Kingston Grenadiers (4) [4-0] OVFL

Defeated Newmarket Bucs 27 to 14 on the road.

The junior Grenadiers defensive line played a superb game. They penetrated the Bucs offence with four sacks and only allowed 48 passing yards. Yardage gained while rushing was no different. The Grenadiers frontline only allowed 64-yards rushing. Twice Newmarket elected to take safeties instead of punting from very deep in their own end. The Grenadiers defense also kept the Bucs key player wide receiver Dylan John (15 receptions for 306-yards) to just one reception for a ten-yard gain. Looking ahead to this weekend Coach Mark Magee said β€œCumberland is a very talented team with playmakers on both sides of the ball. It will be a tremendous challenge for our defense and offense.”

Hamilton wide reciever Marc Fournier stiff arms a Niagara defender as he crosses the goal line
6 Hamilton Ironmen (6) [3-1] OVFL

Defeated Niagara Spears 21 to 17 on the road.

Head coach Ken McGuire was happy with the win, crediting his running backs for stepping up and kick-starting Hamilton’s rushing attack. β€œTafari had a fumble really earlier in the game. He tried to cutback twice and you just can’t do that,” chuckled McGuire, β€œhe made a mistake, but he shook it off. Tafari’s a first year back so he’ll learn and he’s going to be real good. We won, but there are definitely some things that we still need to work on,” admitted McGuire, β€œwe need to be tackling better on defense and we need to execute better on offense. We could easily be 1-3 right now.” Host the Markham Raiders Sunday.

7 Cambridge Lions (7) [3-1] OVFL

Defeated London Jr. Mustangs 45 to 13 at home.

Got back in the win column with a convincing 45 to 13 victory over a struggling Jr. Mustangs squad. QB Matthew Skalos was efficient in the victory with 11 of 15 passes for 195 yards, 4 TDs with 0 INTs. Travel down highway 24 to meet the Bisons.

8 Myers Riders (8) [3-1] OVFL

Defeated Toronto Thunder 36 to 12 at home.

Coming in at 8th is a team that could be 1 when all is said and done, showing the depth of the JV age group. Myers QB Dimitri Morand had his best outing of the season with 239 yards with 3 TDs and only 1 INT. Keep it going Dimitri.

9 Metro Toronto Wildcats (9) [3-1] OVFL

Defeated Etobicoke Eagles 42 to 13 on the road.

Even with their best player WR Trivel Pinto going reception-less for the game, the JV Wildcats depth proved to be the difference maker as Metro pulled out an impressive 41-13 victory on the road.
Wide Receivers Quinn Charles, Jack Vernon and up and comer Daniel Mensah stepped it up for the Wildcats, combining for over 130 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns. Linebackers Amir Zeisler and Safa Sulatanov, Defensive Tackle David Kuthe and Defensive Back Max Isakov got shout outs from coaches for their defensive effort in week 4. Linebacker Deshawn Stevens, the best defensive player in the Junior OV, had another outstanding game against Etobicoke. Stevens had 14 tackle assists, 4 solo tackles and added his league leading fifth interception.

10 Twin Cities Predators (10) [4-0] OFC

Defeated Sarnia Sturgeons 17 to 8 at home.

The three headed rushing monster of Twin Cities proved that it is one of the elite backfields in the OFC. The backfield consists of Mike Lynch, Tyler Woods, and Tre Nicholson. The speed and ability of these three backs is something that is worth watching for all three can hurt opposing defenses and all three are threats to score every time they touch the ball. Have a bye this weekend.

Honourable Mentions:

Toronto Thunder [2-2], Sarnia Sturgeon [3-1], Cumberland Panthers [3-1], Niagara Spears [2-2].
