OVFL Recap: VR Limestone Grenadiers lock the door to end zone

[NEWMARKET, ON.]

The Limestone District Grenadiers locked the door to their end zone and threw away the key while on the road in Newmarket. In week four of the Ontario Varsity Football League varsity division the Grenadiers, who are now 3-1, shutout the Newmarket Bucs (1-3) 23-0. All three losses for the Bucs have been shutouts.

The Grenadiers offence played another great day on the field. Quarterbacks Tyler Filson and Nathan Thompson threw for a combined 11-of-27 for 131-yards. While carrying the pigskin the Grenadiers moved the ball 53-yards.

Defense has always been and will continue to be a key factor to the Grenadiers success. Not only did they shutout the Newmarket Bucs, they picked off a couple huge plays from the Bucs offense. Hayden Peters had an 82-yard interception return to the end zone. Linebacker Joshua Dumaresq also put points on the board when he picked up a fumble from the 12-yard line and ran in for the touchdown.

β€œOur defence is our strength,” said head coach Ken Dearborn. β€œ(The) shutout was an accomplishment.”

The third touchdown for the Grenadiers was on a 1-yard pass from quarterback Nathan Thompson to Liam Brand.

The senior varsity Limestone District Grenadiers now hold a 3-1 record. They will pound the gridiron in Week 5 against second place Cumberland Panthers (3-1).

β€œCumberland is a very good team,” said Dearborn. We have nothing special planned. They are too well coached to be surprised by anything we do.”

Both junior and senior divisions will be at home on Saturday, June 23, 2012. Game times are 1:00pm and 3:30pm respectively at Loyalist Collegiate and Vocational Institute in Kingston.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
