Zach was a talented football player and was an integral part of the Hurricanes offensive line which helped lead the Hurricanes to back-to-back OFC Championships in 2010 and 2011, and gave the team a berth into the Canadian Bowl Championship in 2011.
Team President, Mike Samuel, released a statement on Friday stating that, “Zach had plans on going to Mac this season and yet potentially still suit up for the Canes. Zach was with us for the last 2 seasons and for those that knew him, he was truly a remarkable young man.”
Mike Samuel went on to say, “Words cannot express our heartfelt sympathies to the Duguay family, parents Brian and Kelly and sister Jocelyn. He was a big man with an even bigger heart…you will truly be missed.”
The outpouring of support for Zach and his family during this difficult time is amplified on Facebook and Twitter from current and past players who had the opportunity to play with Zach and ‘go to battle with’ as many have mentioned.
Zach was a very quiet individual who went to work on the football field every day and was there to help his teammates any way he could to get the win. The 6’5″, 300lbs offensive lineman has been regarded by his teammates as a leader on and off the field, who had so much potential and such an unparalleled love for the game. Zach never let his seizures stop him from playing the game he loved so much and he would find it deep down inside to continue playing the game and do whatever he could to help is fellow teammates.
Our condolences go out to the Duguay family.
